Kinsanaile

Guarding the pass through the Great Southern Range, the small city of Kinsanaile (Gold Mountain Pass) is famous throughout Sudland as a place where those with the right skills, fortitude, and luck can strike it rich.   As the base and jumping-off point for miners heading into the mountains to test their fortune at finding the next lucrative vein of precious metals, Kinsanaile attracts the eccentric, unorthodox, and sometimes plain crazy looking to get rich quick. As the only way into the prosperous country of Sudland from the north, Kinsanaile passes caravans of traders, merchants, and entertainers through its well-guarded towers and gates every day, most heading south toward East Road Crossing and then west to Daskar; others heading north out of Sudland, then east toward Sendoshi or west to Okkudo and points beyond. The mix of cultures and characters passing through and living in Kinsanaile lead to one of the liveliest, most varied, and most diverse markets in all of the world, surpassed perhaps only by the great cities of Daskar and Sendoshi. Everything from Nodyund dried fish to fine silk from Senyon and Chessa can be found for sale in Kinsanaile, even fine jewelry wrought by Elvirim crafters and tools made by Dwarvirim smiths.   Because it is on or near the most-traveled trade routes on Derkomai, many caravanners and troupes of entertainers make Kinsanaile their base and home, including the Unsurpassed Artists of Theatre Magique, one of the most famous troupes in the world. As home to so many famous entertainers, including Donatello Genovesi and Diaanen Elorialir Alea'athem, the stages of Kinsanaile are considered among the finest in the world, despite the relatively small size of the city.

Demographics

The vast majority of the people of Kinsanaile are Human, mostly Sudmanne, with a few Senmanne and Azmasanmanne. The city has a very few permanent Elvirim and Dwarvirim residents.

Government

The city government of Kinsanaile is led by Baron Severin Andersen, who is under Duke Severin Tachibana Larssen (their similar names being a somewhat unfortunate coincidence that has occasionally led to confusion and embarrassment). The Duke Severin is over the Duchy of Azmakoku, which controls eastern Sudland, including Kinsanaile. Ultimately, of course, they are all under King Einar Tachibana Larssen, king of Sudland.   The city government under Baron Andersen is run by a mayor and city council that oversee the day-to-day affairs of the city, including policing, providing water and managing waste, and collecting and disposing of trash. Baron Andersen, being somewhat of a fop, finds waste and filth very distasteful, so the cobblestone and crushed rock streets of Kinsanaile are kept clean for the most part.

Defences

Kinsanaile is surrounded by a thick and tall wall of cut stone with crenelations and towers spaced regularly. Inside the walls, Baron Severin Andersen makes his seat at Gold Mountain Castle (Kinsanyosa), which is a squat, heavily fortified castle made of the same cut stone as the city walls.

Infrastructure

Being a border outpost, Kinsanaile is somewhat rustic, but it is also relatively wealthy. It guards the entrance to Sudland from the north, so its infrastructure is stout and well-maintained. The city proper is surrounded by stone walls about 25 feet (7.6 meters) tall and 15 feet (4.5 meters) thick, topped by a walkway and crenelations. The wall surrounds an area about 1.5 miles square (3.9 square kilometers), with square towers about 40 feet (12 meters) tall placed about every 400 yards (400 meters) along the wall. Outside of the walls are numerous small businesses and somewhat ramshackle houses along haphazard, winding streets.

Tourism

Due to its fame for its entertainers and wealthy and exotic markets, Kinsanaile is a destination that most everyone in Sudland and beyond wants to visit. Some also come to try their luck at finding gems, gold, and other precious metals in the mountains and hills surrounding the city. The city hosts many inns, roadhouses, boarding houses, and lodges of varying quality, from those fit for royalty and nobility down to barely livable rooms with a pile of straw for a bed. There are also many pubs, taverns, alehouses, barrooms, as well as brothels and other houses of ill repute frequented by miners that struck it rich (most are then very quickly fleeced of their gains). Of course, the city also has its famous stages where world-famous entertainers making their home in Kinsanaile (and guest performers from outside the city) perform for large crowds.
