Elves
Elves are ancient, immortal beings spun from the Dark, emerging from its currents known as the River. Rare and enigmatic, they exist in small numbers—no more than twenty at a time—each life a fragment in an eternal cycle of rebirth. Born with memories and skills carried from previous incarnations, they live detached from mortal time and concerns, moving through the world with patience, perfection, and serenity. Mortals may see them as ethereal, aloof, or inscrutable; Elves, in turn, perceive mortals as fleeting, fragile creatures whose lives ripple briefly through the eternal tapestry. Bound together not by social convention but by the Life Stream, a living repository of all Elven experience, they see themselves not as individuals, but as a single consciousness flowing through time—creators, observers, and refiners of the world, forever shaped by and shaping the currents of the Dark.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Elves possess a humanoid form but are genderless and do not reproduce biologically. Their bodies are slender yet muscular, optimized for endurance, agility, and precision. They have two arms and two legs, with long, graceful fingers capable of fine manipulation. Their skeletal structure is slightly denser than humans’, supporting longer lifespans and resistance to injury. Skin and tissue can shimmer subtly under certain light or when using the Dark, reflecting their magical affinity.
Genetics and Reproduction
Elves do not reproduce biologically. New Elves are generated from the Dark, reincarnating with partial memories from previous lives. Their biology does not require mating, and they exhibit no sexual dimorphism. Occasional new births in the Dark are unpredictable and often emerge with unique traits or affinities.
Growth Rate & Stages
Elves mature slowly, achieving physical and cognitive maturity within decades but continuing to refine skills and perception over centuries. Lifespan is effectively infinite unless killed by trauma or disease. Their rebirth cycle can be viewed as a spiritual and cognitive “growth stage,” adding accumulated knowledge to the Life Stream.
Ecology and Habitats
Elves thrive in environments rich in the Dark or with magical resonance, but they are highly adaptable. They often dwell in forests, ancient ruins, or atop human settlements, seeking solitude or subtle influence. They interact with their environment to refine it and leave it in harmonious balance, rather than exploit it.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Elves are omnivorous but eat moderately, often using food to sustain energy rather than for pleasure. Some derive minor sustenance from the Dark itself. They often cultivate rare herbs, magical fungi, or enchanted plants to maintain health or enhance attunement to the River.
Biological Cycle
While not subject to mortal aging, Elves exhibit subtle seasonal or environmental responses, such as changes in skin luminescence or sensitivity to natural energies. They do not hibernate but may enter extended meditation or attunement cycles with the River.
Behaviour
Elves are solitary, contemplative, and perfectionistic. They are not motivated by novelty but by refinement and mastery. Relationships with mortals are detached and morally ambiguous, akin to humans’ perception of animals. They are calm, patient, and serene, often seeming disinterested, yet they may intervene subtly to preserve balance or beauty.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Elves have no formal hierarchy. Solitary by preference, they are unified through the Life Stream, which serves as a cultural and cognitive network. Encounters between Elves are neutral or curious, not socially obligatory.
Facial characteristics
Elven faces are highly symmetrical and sharply defined, often described as ethereal or timeless. They feature high cheekbones, elongated eyes, straight noses, and delicate lips, giving them a serene, almost untouchable quality. Expressions are generally measured and subdued, rarely displaying mortal extremes of emotion, which can make their reactions seem enigmatic or detached. Their gaze often carries subtle awareness, as if perceiving layers of the world invisible to mortals.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Elves have enhanced sight, hearing, and subtle perception of the Dark. They can sense magical currents and detect rifts in reality, allowing them to navigate or exploit areas influenced by the Dark. They can access the Life Stream directly, experiencing memories of other Elves as visions or intuitive knowledge. Their perception is less reactive to mortal threats, focusing instead on patterns, potential, and continuity.
NPC Race
Elves have a slender, elongated build, optimized for grace, endurance, and precision rather than brute strength. Their limbs are long and flexible, with lean muscle tone that gives them an elegant and fluid presence in motion. Despite their slight frames, their bone and joint structure is denser than that of mortals, allowing them resilience against injury and prolonged activity over centuries. Their posture is naturally poised and balanced, conveying a sense of calm confidence and deliberate movement.
Elves exhibit subtle variations in skin tone, ranging from pale ivory to soft olive, often with a faint iridescent or pearlescent sheen that reflects their attunement to the Dark. Hair colors are similarly varied, from silvery white to deep onyx or muted jewel tones, sometimes catching light in a way that seems almost magical. Their bodies are usually unmarked by scars or blemishes, though faint natural patterns, like luminescent veins or delicate runes, can appear in certain individuals as a sign of magical affinity or attunement to the Dark.
Flat Affect
Elves are often described as exhibiting a flat affect, meaning they show little outward expression of their emotions. Their faces tend to remain calm and unchanging, rarely displaying smiles, frowns, or other reactions that signal inner feelings. When they speak, their voices are typically steady and monotone, lacking the emotional inflections common in other races. Their body language is minimal, with few gestures or movements that would normally accompany emotional states, giving them an air of composure or detachment. This does not necessarily mean that elves feel nothing internally; rather, they have a reduced ability—or perhaps a cultural or biological tendency—to express their emotions outwardly, making them appear reserved, mysterious, or emotionally distant to others.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
- Mortals: Viewed as fleeting, morally ambiguous, and fragile. Bonds are possible but always asymmetrical.
- Others / Awakened: Potentially useful, but interactions are approached with detachment and caution.
- Other Elves: Encounters are rare, neutral, and optional. Connection is maintained primarily through the Life Stream.
