Valen River

The Valen River is a deep, wide waterway with a strong current. Its waters are generally clear, reflecting the sky, but can become murky after heavy rains. The river teems with fish, including trout, eels, and catfish, while waterfowl like herons and ducks are a common sight along its banks. Melting snow from up-river causes the river to swell in the warmer seasons, sometimes flooding low-lying areas of Braelor while during the winter season the river never completely freezes, but its edges often develop a crust of ice.

Importance to Braelor

The Valen River is the lifeblood of Braelor, carving its way through the city as it journeys from the distant highlands to the vast ocean. Its waters are a source of trade, sustenance, and identity for the people of Braelor. The Valen River begins in the Crystal Heights, a mountain range far to the northwest, where snowmelt and underground springs feed its headwaters. These pristine waters flow swiftly through rugged terrain, carving deep gorges and feeding numerous smaller tributaries. The river broadens and slows as it enters a large fertile region known for its abundant crops and vineyards. Afterwards it passes through Braelor, dividing the city into two halves: Old Town on the north bank and New Harbor on the south. A series of elegant bridges connect the two, the most famous being the Silver Span, an architectural marvel of stone, steel and silver.

The Valen provides Braelor with drinking water, irrigation for surrounding farmland, and a transportation route for goods. A network of canals branches off the river, bringing water directly into the city and creating picturesque waterways, particularly in Old Town.

Legends and Myths

Many legends and myths exist regarding the Valen River system, including that those who desecrate the river suffer misfortune (a tale often invoked to discourage pollution), claims that drinking directly from the Valen at sunrise grants clarity of mind and body, and a popular ghost story that speaks of a queen who fled her enemies by leaping into the river. Her spirit is said to haunt the waters, seeking vengeance.
