The Whispiri Clan and the Verdant Veil

The Manauense Jungle

The jungle region north of Valtora, known as The Manauense Jungle, is an ancient and untamed land, where the boundary between the physical world and The Veil is unusually thin. This overlap causes magic to spill into the jungle in concentrated forms known as Old Magic. These manifestations appear as glowing crystal-like formations, radiant pools, or even ethereal beings that pulse with raw, untamed power. The jungle teems with life, from towering trees that hum with latent energy to creatures born of magic itself.

Legends say The Manauense Jungle was once a sacred land where the gods communed with mortals, leaving behind echoes of their divine essence in the form of the Old Magic. Over millennia, it has become a site of reverence, mystery, and conflict for those who dwell within and near its borders.

The Whispiri Clan

The Whispiri Clan is a matriarchal society of agile, cunning, and fiercely loyal catfolk. They view themselves as guardians of the Old Magic, entrusted with its protection by ancient pacts formed long before their recorded history. The clan is divided into nine families, each named after a unique aspect of the jungle. These families operate independently but unite under a single High Matriarch during times of crisis.

  • Key Beliefs: The Whispiri believe that the Old Magic is sacred, not to be used or disturbed, as it is the lifeblood of the Verdant Veil and a bridge between worlds. They see themselves as its protectors, with stories passed down warning of calamities befalling those who try to exploit it.
  • Sacred Sites: The clan maintains sacred groves and shrines deep within the jungle, where they offer prayers to the The Veil's spirits and the ancestors who first took up the mantle of guardianship.
The Nine Families

Each family has a specific role in the clan’s survival and defense of the Old Magic.

  1. Clawe: Stewards of the jungle’s flora, experts in medicinal plants and poisons.
  2. Shadewalker: Scouts and rangers, masters of stealth and guerrilla tactics.
  3. Stormpaw: The warriors of the clan, known for their ferocity in battle.
  4. Moonstrider: Mystics and oracles who interpret the will of the Veil’s spirits.
  5. Dewclaw: Hunters and providers, masters of tracking prey.
  6. Windwhisper: Messengers and diplomats, maintaining communication between families.
  7. Skygazer: Astronomers and lorekeepers, who map the stars and track omens.
  8. Sunfang: Artisans and builders who craft the clan’s homes and tools.
  9. Stonepelt: Defenders of the sacred sites, who live closest to the Old Magic itself.

The Manauense Conflict

The Whispiri's sacred duty to protect the Old Magic has placed them at odds with the Saural'tek Tribe, a clan of lizardfolk who also dwell within The Manauense Jungle. The Saural'tek are led by Starpriest Xilthar, a visionary leader who claims to have received dreams and visions from the stars foretelling a coming calamity that will destroy his people.

Xilthar believes the only way to save the Saural'tek is by harnessing the Old Magic to empower their warriors, fortify their lands, and stave off this apocalyptic threat. However, the rituals required to extract the Old Magic cause harm to the jungle and destabilize the magical balance of the region.

The conflict began when Xilthar's tribe attempted to harvest a large concentration of Old Magic from a site sacred to the Whispiri. The Whispiri retaliated swiftly, ambushing the lizardfolk and reclaiming the site. Since then, skirmishes between the two groups have escalated into a full-scale war.

  • Whispiri Perspective: They view the Saural'tek’s actions as blasphemy and desecration, threatening to unbalance the Veil and unleash chaos.
  • Saural'tek Perspective: They see the Whispiri as selfish and short-sighted, hoarding power that could save lives.

Current State of the War

The jungle is now a battleground of guerrilla warfare, with both sides vying for control over key sites of Old Magic. The Whispiri rely on their intimate knowledge of the jungle to outmaneuver the lizardfolk, while the Saural'tek use their shamanistic magic and brute force to push back.
