Undeath
Fueled by Necrotic Energy, a soul can be protected from the Maelstrom or a corpse can be animated.
Hungry Dead
Without access to the Necrotic Energy Plane, all Undead require the regular intake of Necrotic Energy to survive. To do so requires the killing of living creatures and harvesting the Necrotic Energy that they release upon death, or — in the case of more powerful Undead — absorb the Necrotic Energy from other Undead. Regardless of how they are created, all Undead need the Necrotic Energy from killing or corrupting the living to survive.
Corporeal Undead
Corporeal Undead are corpses that the soul has fled from animated by Necrotic Energy. With more power they can access the memories of their mortal life. Revenants, Vampires, and the like can access their old memories and may express their old personality, but no soul remains.
Incorporeal Undead
Souls that have been banished from their bodies, the Incorporial Undead tend to exist in the Ethereal Mists to avoid damage from the Maelstrom
Invested Undead
Invested Undead are souls that have re-inhabited a corpse to protect them from the Maelstrom. As with all undead they are fueled by Necrotic Energy. Mortals will pursue this type of Undeath to achieve immortality.
