Primalshaping

The second earliest developed magic after Pacts were discovered, Primal magic allows the practitioner to tap into the primal forces of creation, these forces make up the mortal realm and are not tied to other Planes.

History of Primalshaping

Elven Mastery

The root of Elven magic, Primalshaping springs from their understanding of the nature of creation. Elven Wizardry is an offshoot of this understanding as it was developed after the Godswar.

Spirit teachers

As Pacts were made, there were those who attempted to understand how the granted powers worked. As well, instead of making pacts, there are those who negotiated for knowledge of Primal Forces. Between these two groups, the rituals to tap into the Primal Forces was discovered.

Monstrous Powers

Remnants of the Godswar maintain their connection to the Primal. While not as powerful as the Dragon Tyrants, these beings were either suborned by the Tyrants, like the Dragons, or cast out to fend for themselves. These traditions are maintained more through inherited rituals than true understanding of their mechanisms.

Wizardry's Theft of Secrets

As Wizardry developed they sought to understand the nature of Primalshaping. Some were able to extract the secrets of the Primal Energies and learned to incorporate them into their magics. Since then Primalshapers have viewed practitioners of Wizardry with suspicion and distrust.

Dangers of Primalshaping

As the Primalshaper draws more on the Primal, the Primal makes permanent changes on them. It is common for aged Primalshapers to take on aspects of nature, bark for skin, the shape of animals, mineralization of flesh, and other mutations. Upon reaching true mastery of Primal powers the Primalshaper will eventually succumb to these changes, becoming an avatar of the primal driven not by their intellect but by their new instinct.

Each Primalshaper has a wellspring of power they can safely draw on. As they run out of that power they can draw on additional power, but that accelerates their transformation from their mortal form.

Limitations of Primalshaping

Primalshaping can only heighten, manipulate, or diminish natural processes. It cannot tap into the energies of other planes. And spells typically can only function one way and not be manipulated by the caster.
