Craft Guilds

Structure

Each guild within the Edic Concord has a guild hall with its resident Guild Master in each of the free cities. The Guild Masters communicate to set the roles and duties of the guild, which including the following:

  • To approve the education and admittance of new members
  • To maintain standards of quality and ethics with regular inspections
  • To fix prices in times of crisis or disaster between members who are seen as brothers in craft rather than competitors in trade
  • To care and provide for members and their families in the event of illness, death, or retirement
  • To charge a yearly membership tithe to provide such assistance and protect members from excessive civic taxation
  • To protect trade secrets from outsiders—sharing with approved guilds was permitted
  • To treat with the Merchants Guild for the insurance of carts, products, and horses during traveling trades
  • To regulate work hours and conditions for workers and apprentices

It is illegal to practice a craft or create a product without membership in the appropriate guild. Apprentices are usually taken into training between the ages of eleven and thirteen. Study as an apprentice takes anywhere from three to nine years depending on the craft, during which the apprentice cannot marry and receives no wage, but has their food and lodging provided for by their master.
