The Church of Sarenrae

Worship of gods in the Republic of Waterdeep is a fact of everyday life for many.   Worship of gods and goddesses like Tymora, Tyr, Helm, Auril, Umberlee and Illmater are common. Other deities are sometimes represented, and followers of Oghma, Bahamut, Mielikki, and Waukeen are also fairly common.   However, there are others who's worship is either scattered and forgotten from an ancient age, or who's worship is new and fresh, the knowledge of the gods coming in with immigrants, travelers and merchants.   The kingdoms to the north once revered a goddess named Sarenrae, known as the Dawnflower. A goddess of light, healing, redemption and flame, who accepted the outcast and downtrodden, and who strove to draw out the goodness and light in those who had forsaken it.   She was one of the premiere goddesses in the north, until the war with _______, during which Church of Tyr grew more and more powerful, with support of the local rulership, and the constant wars.   While not unknown, Sarenrae's popularity waned, and her name is rarely uttered alongside the other 'greater' deities any longer. There are still churches and clergy dedicated to her name, but she is an uncommon goddess to worship in this day.

Structure

The ancient seat of Sarenrae's power is the duchy of Liaese. This kingdom, once a great trade power in the north, has fallen on hard times. Strife is common in their lands, and greedy neighbors encroach hungrily on their borders. Beyond this, the structure of Sarenrae's worshippers is rather scattered and decentralized. The largest group of worshippers in the Republic of Waterdeep, though they exert no control beyond the capital itself, is the clergy of the Chapel of the Dawn, in the Merchant District.

Public Agenda

The Church of Sarenrae is dedicated to helping the downtrodden, healing the weak, and redeeming the fallen. In addition to this, the Sarenites are interested in re-establishing the worship of the Dawnflower across the north. To this end, they petition governments and communities to offer their services and to spread the worship of Sarenrae further abroad.

Assets

Within the Republic, the church itself is not a powerful organization. While it generally enjoys good will in the places that it's worship has been established, they haven't made much headway against the worship of Tyr, who fills many of the same areas of worship that Sarenrae does, while being focused on Justice and War more specifically.

Nothing is beyond the redeeming embrace of the Dawnflower.
