Fort Issimo (i-suh-mow)
Purpose / Function
Fort Issimo was built to help establish a front line facility in the path to the Major Keys's invasion route. After the Thin White Duke's forces were defeated by the Sabatonians, the Synchronites felt it pertinent to reinforce the research and excavation site they had built around the old temple to Bebopatopoulus, God of Song and Speech.
Alterations
Much has been added and modified with the fort as the war has progressed. Once merely an open obelisk above ground with a sizeable cave network, the obelisk has been turned into the central tower of the keep. Docks have been added to account for the comings and goings of both personnel and supplies.
Defenses
The fort's primary defenses are its walls, cannons, and ballistae. Exterior walls of magically-reinforced stone and metal line the perimeter of the fort. Similar walls make up the inner bastions and main keep of the fort. The only major weakpoint in the walls is near the port gates, which allow access to sailing ships. These gates are made of large portcullises that, when lowered, extend only 30-feet into the water.
Cannon and heavy ballista emplacements are staggered at regular intervals along the outer, inner, and keep walls. Watchtowers are placed between each weapon emplacement. Each watchtower has stairs to access the ground level, as well as the inside the wall. Most of the areas accessible inside the walls are armories, guard barracks, or protected positions which can be used by ranged defenders.
History
The fort was quickly built to act as a forward operating base for the Synchronites. The Synchronicity, despite its growth, was still just one island among the Acapellago. A call was sent out amongst their neighbors to send any willing troops or supplies to bolster both manpower and the fort's defenses. The chain of islands banded together supply ships and warriors of all stripes within a fortnight.
