Harbingers of Despair

The Harbingers of Despair are a secretive and malevolent cult devoted to Brodonna, the Goddess of Misfortune. They exist to spread chaos, suffering, and misfortune in her name, seeing themselves as instruments of her will. The Harbingers believe that by sowing despair, they bring the world closer to the true nature of existence—a reality where joy is fleeting, and suffering is the only constant.

Structure and Hierarchy

The Harbingers of Despair operate with a loose, decentralized structure, reflecting the chaotic nature of their goddess. However, there is a hierarchy based on the level of devotion and the ability to cause suffering.
  • The Shadowed Voice: The leader of the cult, known as the Shadowed Voice, is a figure cloaked in secrecy and fear. This individual is believed to have a direct connection with Brodonna, receiving visions and instructions from her. The Shadowed Voice orchestrates the cult’s activities, ensuring that despair spreads across the land. The identity of the Shadowed Voice is often unknown to all but the most trusted cultists, adding to their aura of dread.

  • Doomsayers: Beneath the Shadowed Voice are the Doomsayers, high-ranking cultists who lead cells of Harbingers in various regions. They are skilled manipulators and bringers of catastrophe, able to twist the fates of others with precision. Each Doomsayer is responsible for spreading misfortune in their assigned territory, whether through inciting wars, causing natural disasters, or bringing ruin to powerful individuals.

  • Misery Weavers: These cultists are experts in curses and dark magic, specializing in bringing specific forms of suffering to their victims. Misery Weavers craft elaborate hexes and rituals that inflict pain, madness, and despair. They often disguise themselves as healers, fortune-tellers, or wise folk, subtly using their powers to turn hope into horror.

  • Griefbringers: The foot soldiers of the Harbingers, Griefbringers are the most visible members of the cult. They are often the ones carrying out the cult’s plans on the ground, spreading rumors, sabotaging crops, poisoning wells, and inciting violence. While they may lack the arcane skills of the Misery Weavers, their dedication to spreading Brodonna’s influence makes them dangerous.

  • The Cursed Initiates: New recruits to the cult, known as Cursed Initiates, must undergo a series of trials to prove their loyalty and worthiness. These trials often involve bringing about a significant act of misfortune, such as causing the death of a loved one or ruining a community. Only those who embrace the cruelty and chaos of these acts can rise through the ranks.

Rituals and Practices

The Harbingers of Despair perform dark and twisted rituals to honor Brodonna and gain her favor. These rituals often involve the suffering and sacrifice of innocent lives, as well as the deliberate sabotage of joy and prosperity.
  1. The Night of Unraveling: A grand ritual performed once a year on the darkest night, where the cult gathers to offer a significant sacrifice to Brodonna. This sacrifice is often a person or group of people whose death will cause the maximum amount of despair. The ritual involves chanting ancient incantations, the spilling of blood, and the invocation of Brodonna’s name to unleash a wave of misfortune.
  2. The Broken Oath: To fully join the ranks of the Harbingers, an initiate must perform the Broken Oath, a ritual in which they betray someone who trusts them deeply. This act of betrayal is meant to sever any ties to their former life and to demonstrate their commitment to spreading despair. The more devastating the betrayal, the higher the esteem they earn within the cult.
  3. Weeping Sigils: Harbingers often mark locations with Weeping Sigils—symbols of Brodonna’s influence that bring misfortune to anyone who lingers nearby. These sigils are drawn in blood or carved into surfaces, usually in hidden places where they won’t be immediately discovered. Once activated, the sigils create a zone of bad luck, where accidents, quarrels, and disasters become more frequent.

Allies and Enemies

The Harbingers of Despair have few allies, as even other dark cults and evil deities view them with suspicion and fear. Their unpredictability and their willingness to cause widespread destruction make them dangerous to align with. However, they may occasionally collaborate with those who also seek to sow chaos, provided it serves their purpose of spreading despair.   Their enemies are numerous, including any forces that stand for hope, order, and prosperity. Paladins, clerics of good-aligned deities, and communities that strive for happiness and peace are all targets of the Harbingers’ wrath.

In Summary

The Harbingers of Despair are a malevolent cult dedicated to Brodonna, the Goddess of Misfortune. They are agents of chaos and suffering, committed to spreading despair across the world. Their rituals are dark and twisted, their structure is chaotic yet hierarchical, and their influence is felt wherever misfortune strikes. To encounter the Harbingers is to face the full force of Brodonna’s cruel and capricious nature, with no hope of escaping the misery they bring.
