Xahkùm's Legion
Xahkùm's temple, located in the City of Noamarù, is a large stone pyramid dedicated to Xahkùm, the Ak'aaran God of War. Xahkùm's temple, and the city it resides in, are both protected by a celebrated religious military order called Xahkùm's Legion.
Structure
The legion's total man power is about 5000 soldiers. Of that number, about 3500 soldiers are Jaguar Shapeshifters, while the remaining 1500 or so are Firemage. Both groups operate independent of each other, but report to the same authorities.
Jaguar Shapeshifters
The shapeshifters are divided into 3 groups of about 1000 individuals, who are each tasked with different tasks. One of those battalions is tasked with supporting the defence of the city, along with other soldiers. In case of sieges, they are the first to organise and carry out sorties against besieging troupes. The second battalion is posted at the temple. Since it is a single location deep in the city, it is generally the smallest of the three battalions. The third and usually the largest one is the one tasked with operations outside the city, mostly in battles against other cities in the past, or now against the Merchant Republic of Arba.Firemages
Much like the shapeshifters, the fire mages are divided into 3 groups of about 500 men each. These groups usually coordinate with the shapeshifter battalions, but can also act independently to do various tasks. Because of the war being fought in the north, the city allows two groups, so about 1000 firemage, to join the Confederation's army, along with other firemages from the other city-states. The last battalion is kept in the city and are posted both at the temple and on the walls.Culture
While women are allowed to join the legion, they can only do so if they join the Firemages. The Shapeshifter battalions still refuse to admit females within their ranks, even if it would bolster their ranks amidst the war against the Merchant Republic of Arba.
Public Agenda
Xahkùm's legion have been historically dedicated to the protection of the City of Noamarù since its founding. However, since the unification of the confederation, the legion participates in battles to protect not just the capital, but the rest of the country, including other city-states which were enemies of Noamarù in the past.
Assets
The guards wear bronze plate armour and are equipped with iron weapons and Emandine wood bows. They live within the temple and in adjacent buildings. The religious organisation also has outposts outside the city and in other cities within the confederation.
History
The legion started around the year 1150 Bc as a small group of Jaguar shapeshifter soldiers that volunteered to stand guard to protect the temple of Xahkùm. The priest of the temple, with the approbation of the city's king, accepted their offer and made their group official. At the time, they numbered no more than 40 individual, but their ranks steadily grew over the following decades and centuries.
They participated in numerous battles, and always emerged victorious. Even the Occomor Chariot couldn't break their formation, and instead, usually sent the riders and their animal running back. With each battle they won, their ranks grew more and more as shapeshifters from other cities joined. Eventually, elemental mages also began to be accepted, and they formed their own legion, still within the same organisation, but with a degree of independence.
Their fierce reputation carries to the present day. A recent invasion of the Merchant Republic of Arba was halted by the legion just outside the walls of the city, despite the republic having Winged ships and outnumbering them 2-1. The republic's forces were pushed back north, where the war is now at a stalemate, held on the Ak'aaran side by the legion.
