Skylians
"Blessed be Ymir! The skylians have arrived. Maybe this day isn't lost after all!"The Skylians, also known as the eastern Rumalians, are a distinct ethnicity, culture and in some cases, species, from the rest of Rumalia, who inhabit the Dragon's head region in the north-east of the country.

Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Due to their relative isolation from other Rumalians, and late integration into the wider realm, Skylians have developed and retained a strong and distinctif accent, commonly called skylish rumalian, which is sometimes hard to understand for people unfamilliar with it.
In the areas outside of the eastern Rumalia, the Skylians have settled in small numbers, and so most have lost their original language in favour of the local languages. Some have managed to retain a distinct accent or even dialect, especialy in the Accosian Isles.
Culture and cultural heritage
Skylian culture is one of the most influencial in Northern Arros. Because of their long period of raiding and settling various regions to their east, some aspect of their culture spread far beyond their mountainous peninsula. The most noteworthy mention is the spread of the Festival of the Last Moon. Originaly celebrated by the Skylians of the Dragon's head, the Holiday is now celebrated throughout Rumalia, as well as in Alvaros, Northengor, Heoria, and the fork regions. Places in northern Naurcia also celebrate.
Religion
The skylians believe in the same Vecan/Rumalian Patheon of Gods as the other rumalians, but with slight differences. Indeed, while most skylians pray to Ymir, the god of the sky and creator of the world, they also pray a lot to Ungir, the god of the oceans and rivers, for whom they have constructed large wooden temples in all of their port cities. No other region in Rumalia gives Ungir this much importance.Art & Architecture
Most of the region's largest town and cities are located along narrow rivers in deep valleys, or on rocky cliffsides and jagged coastlines. As a result, many of them are built partialy underground, or built along varied elevations.
The houses themselves are primarily made out of wood, with a stone or stone brick foundation and very steep wooden roofs, which allows the large amount of snow precipitation to fall safely down to the ground without damaging the structure. Like in much of Rumalia, the houses also have very few windows, mostly to keep the heat inside during winter.
Many of the houses in the region belong to Birdfolk or Dragonkin Shapeshifters, and as a result, were built with a small adjacent tower-like structure. A platform is located at its top, protected by a small roof from the snow, allowing these flying shapeshifters to fly in and out of their homes far more easily than otherwise.
Foods & Cuisine
Like in the rest of Rumalia, food can sometimes be hard to come by. In the Dragon's head region especialy, the lack of large amounts of arable land combined with a very short growing season, means that inhabitants must trade for grain and much of their fruits and some vegetables, making these items more expensive for them.
However, while the region lacks agriculture, the waters around the peninsula are rich in fisheries. As a result, fish species like salmond, cod, and trout have become staples, as did various shellfish, like crabs and lobsters. Other items, such as potatoes, radish, beetroot and carrots and various salted meats are all commonly grown, caught and consumed, alongside smoked and salted fish.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
A history of raiding
The Dragon's head region is rich is many ressources, except one: Arable land. This became a problem during the middle part of the Second Age, when there wasn't enough land for the growing amount of people in the region. It is unknown who organised the first raid across the Thoskal sea, but by the year 800 bc, they had become a regular occurance in the Kingdom of Alvaros, Northengor and The Fork region. One area of eastern Alvaros was so repeatedly attacked during that period that it became known as the Axe Coast, a name gotten from the weapons the raider used during their pillagings, and which it still bares today.Celebrations
The Winter festival, known in the region as Zim Veryn, is a grand celebration held around the winter solstice, where families gather to celebrate the end of the year together. A few days earlier, the Festival of the Last Moon, known in the region as "siske tu kaa", is a celebration of magic. It is thought that the first such celebrations originated from the Skylians themselves, and more specificaly the local Dragonkins community, some of which came from Enaskia, where they would hold similar celebrations. Finaly, like all Rumalians, they also celebrate Var Vesnat, the holiday which celebrates the arrival of spring in the region.Coming of Age Rites
The Skylian dragonkin have a unique coming of age ceremony. When dragonkins turn 20 years old, they are called to fly from their homes, to the region's highest mountain, and come back within 3 days. If they succeed, they are hailed a true adults and the family host a celebration for them. If they fail, they are allowed to retry as many times as they want, until they succeed. The mountain in question is said to have contained a Dragon's nest centuries ago.
Funerary and Memorial customs
After a person dies, their family and friends gather and say goodbye to them. The body is then lowered onto a specialy crafted ceremonial long boat. Usualy, the boat is then burried, but not always. When possible, the boat is instead floated down one of the region's many river, towards the sea, with the family and friends following on the shore while praying and singing.
When it reaches the sea, an archer, usualy the youngest capable family member present must shot a flaming arrow on the boat to set it on fire. If the deseased person is a woman, then a woman must shoot the arrow, if the deceased person is a man, then a man shoots the arrow instead. Once the boat catches fire, the ceremony is concluded. In some cases, people will stay around until the boat sinks, but this is slightly taboo.
Military
While isolated cases of Skylians working as mercenaries for various other Halses in Rumalia, and even other kingdoms in the region happened before, the intergration of the Halserat of Skagos into the rest of Rumalia near the end of the Second Age encouraged many Skylians, especialy their shapeshifter populations, to join the rumalian army as Jargs.Major organizations
The Skylians in the region are divided into numerous Shapeshifter Clans and other tribes made up of magic or non-magic humans. These groups are all ruled by an Halse, or lord, who resides in the City of Skagos, the principality's current capital, although historicaly they were seated in the town of Skyla, further west along the Thoskal sea. Their Halse is in turn ruled over by the Great Halse, or king, from the City of Sazagar.
