Merchant Republic of Arba
"The trade must flow"-An Arbitian Saying.
Demography and Population
Human
The Republic's demographics are amongst the most diverse in all of the Continent of Arros, thanks to their numerous territories located on three continents. Within these territories, many different cultures and ethnicities live under the banner of the republic.Mage
As luck would have it, or in their case, misfortune, neither Arba itself, nor any of their conquered territory holds a substantial population of mages, be they Elementals or Soulbounds. In fact, their most recent "acquisition" the City of A'anora and its surrounding territories in Mahador, had the least amount of mages in the whole region, which did make the Arbitian conquest easier.Territories
The Mainland
The mainland is the region that includes the island of Arba, as well as a small, lightly populated territory directly to its north, on the continent.Aumera and the Asdrian isles
This dependency is located between the shallow sea, the Jasuan sea, and the Arrosian/Narrow sea. It includes the fairly large City of Aumera, mainly inhabited by Asylians, and the Asdrian isles to the west, which are mainly inhabited by Kinvalians.Vnera
Located to the south-east of the kingdom of Khrona, the dependency of Vnera mainly consists of the island of Nara, on which the City of Vnera is located, as well as numerous smaller and mostly uninhabited smaller islands around it.Harath Island
This dependency is located on the island of Harath, south of the Harathian strait and the Toren sea. Much like the island of Velcaan nearby, Harath produces a lot of grain. However, the island is also important for its mines, particularly coal.Norcali
This very small dependency is situated at the northern tip of an elongated island, located along the Basilisk coast, in north-eastern Mahador. Despite this less-than-favorable location, the colony has become one of the most lucrative for the republic, as the small port of Norcali serves as a gateway to the riches of eastern Mahador.Northern Mahador
The most recently created dependency is located in northern Mahador, east of the mouth of the Golcaï River, and occupied the region surrounding the city of A'anora, as well as the settlement itself. The colony's borders aren't finalised yet as a war is ongoing between the republic and the Ak'aaran Confederation.Velcaan Island
By territory and population, this is the republic's largest dependency. Its strategic location south of the Carathen strait and north of the Wyvern strait allows Arba to control all of the trade between the Mahadorian Ocean and the Illynian sea.Military
Army
The republic, having a relatively low population, does not have a large land army. Nonetheless, each of its territory has its own local armed forces, professionally trained and overseen by local and arbitian captains and generals. Since the country's native mage population is critically low, the republic heavily relies on mage mercenaries to fill their ranks.Navy
Both for the protection of their trade networks, and also to carry all of those traded goods, Arba possesses the largest and most well-equiped navy in not only Arros, but in Enaskia and Mahador as well. They have thousands of ships, which come in all kinds of forms, from small cog ships to large iron-clad war vessels, and even revolutionary Anchor Ships. No single country in the region can hope to win against them at sea. In times of peace, most of these ships are used to trade goods across the sea, but in times of war, many of them are instead used to either transport soldiers around or directly participate in naval battles.Air force
While not as big as their navy, the republic's air force has been growing steadily in the past decades to catch up to the Kinvalian-Paxolian Commonwealth., a neighbouring country that boasts the largest air force of both Arros and Enaskia. The republic maintains around 100 Winged ships, less than a third of the commonwealth, and a bit less than the Kinvalian Empire. Most of those ships are neither military or civilian, but cargo, which can however be easily used during war time.Government
Executive branch
The Baron Circle is a assembly made up of the 8 richest merchant families in the republic. All but one of them are from the City of Arbiro, or the Island of Arba. These individuals each monopolise some of the most lucrative aspects of trade in the country, such as metals, salt, textiles, spices etc. They also have the final say in what goes on in their colonies, and how colonies interact between each other.Legislative branch
The Siqan is an assembly composed of elected representatives from both Arba and the colonies. All free and proprety-owning male or female residents may try to get elected, but usually only members of the richest families or candidates backed by them ever do, making the country act more like an oligarchy than a republic. Members of the Sinqan cannot be admitted into the Siqan if they are not first approved by the Council of 12, composed of 12 senior members of the Siqan who's job is to assure the long term viability of the Siqan. The council of 12 is a assembly composed of 12 senior members of the Siqan who's job is to assure the long term viability of the Siqan. They used to be appointed by the Baron Circle, but they have since acquired the right to elect themselves from the Siqan. Their primary job is to oversee the election process and vet all candidates, as well as communicate the Siqan's requests and questions with the Baron circle.Religion
Officially, the republic's government follows no fate. However, most in the government, and indeed on the Island of Arba itself are Choranians. The republics does allow complete freedom of religion in the territory of their dependencies, as long as the religions in questions are the "Mainstream" ones. What counts as mainstream is at the discretion of the local governor.
Foreign Relations
Allies
Thanks to their aggressive expansion, the republic doesn't have many allies, and the ones they do have, like the Kingdom of Gysia, the Kingdom of Asderaan and the Kingdom of Nhaggoria are only of convenience. Gysia is in fact no longer Arba's ally following the The Conquest of South-Shorai and Arba's betrail in that conflict. Their most solid ally is the kingdom of Nhaggoria, who they help against The Dragonknights insurgency in the Vechor Islands.Neutral countries
Both the Confederation of Ru'mensh in northern Arros, and the Kingdom of Saramen in Eastern Enaskia are both important trading partners of Arba, but have have no involvement beyond that. In fact, the kingdom of Saramen remains wary of Arba's influence in their Valcorian duchy.Enemies
In the last century, Arba has accumulated many enemies around the Mahadorian Ocean. In Enaskia, the Triarchy of the Free Cities remains their main adversary, as both countries compete for dominance over the western Mahadorian ocean and northern Mahador. The Kingdom of Khrona, allied to the Triarchy, has been in multiple wars against the republic, and remains an enemy seeking to reclaim the city of Vnera. For a few decades as well, relations with the Kavasian Empire have soured, first because of their alliance with the Kingdom of Gysia, but also because of their growing influence within the City of Vrahlis, crucial to the empire's economy. Finaly, the Ak'aaran Confederation is in an active war against the republic, after the later orchestrated a coup in the City of A'anora and rapidly took control of it and the surrounding land.Agriculture & Industry
The main industry of the island of Arba is gold mining and shipbuilding. The economy of many of Arba's colonies is highly specialised and based on only one or two key local products. The island of Velcan is considered to be the republic's food basket, exporting the vast majority of its grain production to other dependencies and to the Island of Arba itself. The republic's newest colony, the Dependency of A'anora, exports rare and expensive Mahadorian products, like Vanilla and Emandine wood. The city of Arba also holds one of the most powerful financial institution in Hysal: The bank of Arba, which caters to merchants to which it issues loans and allow currency exchange. Their main competitor is the Bronze bank of Vrahlis
Trade & Transport
Trade is the backbone of Arba's immense wealth and growing power. They act as the middle-men for most trade transactions in and around the Mahadorian sea, allowing them to accumulate large amounts of wealth while also producing very little of their own products. A few of those items include: Textiles and tin metal from the Kingdom of Asderaan, Spices from Mahador, most notably Vanilla, as well as cane sugar, Rum, and Emandine wood.
Officlal Currency
The Hatti is the republic's official currency. A sign of Arba growing power, many merchants working in port cities along the Mahadorian sea only accept to be paid in Hatti, instead of the local currency. Many kingdoms have large reserves of Hatti coins as well, especially those who trade with the republic often. Unlike other country's currency, the Hatti's production is very heavily scrutinized to ensure that its value remains constant. To do this, minters are required to use 3.5 grams of near-pure gold per coins, which ensures a stable value, a characteristic that made it the standard international currency around the Mahadorian Ocean.

History
The island of Arba found itself de-facto independant in the year 3 bc, as its previous owner, the Eastern Esnian Empire, was rapidaly collapsing. In 2 Ac, the small island would officialy become independant as its leading autority, the Rtensi family, signed a treaty with Paxolia and Shorai, assuring their independance and establishing and alliance with them.
In 5 Ac, the Kingdom of Arba as it was know known, purchased some lands from Paxolia located north of the island, giving them a foothold on the continent. During the next decade, the city of Arbiro would grow rapidaly after a period of decline during the past few decades, which was due to the city's shipyards being left under funded by the empire. The Rtensi family decided to invest in trade, as nearby port cities on the mainland were still dealing with The Blight.
This proved to be wise, as the island soon became a regular stop for ships sailing between Enaskia and Arros. The money collected from the port duties were invested into the island's shipyards over the next few decades. In 71 ac, with the death of king Deremo Rtensi, the Kingdom of Arba rebranded itself into the Merchant republic of Arba. The changes went deeper than the name, as a new constitution was written, giving previous entities within the government, most notably the council of 12, more power than the king. As king Deremo II had no heirs, this council would appoint his successor, in theory ensuring his respect of the council's authority.
This agreement worked until 79 ac, when the new king, Samuel I, would stage a successful coup-d'état with the help of the kingdom of Shorai. This stripped the council of nearly all of its power, and reverted the Merchant republic into a kingdom for the next century.
In the year 187 ac, the kingdom's monarchy system was finally abolished as the current king was found dead, having been choked out in his sleep. The kingdom turned back into the more democratic system it briefly had before Samuel I's coup. That same year, the kingdom of Sirok would declare war on them, as its king was the brother of Arba's old king. Thanks to their better navy, the kingdom of Arba managed to win, by preventing the Kingdom of Sirok from landing on the island.
The next few decades would be largely uneventful. The republic would gradualy built up its power, especialy in trade, as Arbitian merchants and boats could already be seen all over the Mahadorian sea at this point. In the year 226 ac, the Merchant republic would be given exclusive trading rights in the port city of Vnera, which was at this time part of the kingdom of Khrona.
Their main rival in the region, the triarchy of free cities, and particularly the City of Lylos, would henceforth become wary of Arba's expension. In 242, war broke out between the two. Supported by the kingdom of Khrona, Arba managed to win the war and keep their trading rights in the city of Vnera.
In 264, Arba would buy the port of Nar, in eastern Paxolia, annexing the city and the land around it. A treaty of peace and military cooperation between the two kingdoms was also signed. In 294, the Merchant Republic of Arba would enter a similar agreement with the Commonwealth of Kinvalia-Paxolia concerning the city of Aumera.
The island of Harath, which had previously belonged to the kingdom of Torea, would be annexed by Arba in 327 ac following their victory during the first Torennian war. This acquisition would kickstart a short period a rapid territorial expansion for the republic.

In 331, they would enter negotiations with the commonwealth to try and extend the current agreement, but the Commonwealth had grown weary of their growing power, and so entered an alliance with Khrona instead. Betrayed, Arba decided to unilaterally annex the city of Aumera. This began a war that the commonwealth would loose, much to the surprise of everyone. Arba was allowed to keep the city of Aumera, but lost most of the land around Nar, weakening their position there.
In 344, the Merchant republic of Arba would annex the city of Vnera and the island of Nara after winning a short war against the kingdom of Khrona. Then, 5 years later in 349, a war would breakout between the the republic and the commonwealth, and by the end, Arba would be forced to cede the city of Nar, giving it back to the Kingdom of Paxolia, but would also gain territory in Enaskia, specifically the Asdrian isles near Aumera.
In 361, while the Kavasian Empire was distracted with their War with Gysia, the Merchant republic would invade and annex their ally, the kingdom of Velcani, which was engulfed in a civil war. The island of Velcaan became the republic's largest colony, and gave them acess to the Illynian sea, and control over the Carathen strait between it and the Mahadorian Ocean.
The next year in 362, the small city-state of Norcali, which effectively was a protectorate of the Kingdom of Velcani, would surrender to Arba after the republic laid siege to it for 2 months. Trade and military alliances were made between the Republic and the kingdoms of Nhaggoria and Asderaan in 362 and 365, respectively.
During the mid 360s, Arba's extensive spy network caught wind of a deal being made between the Ak'aaran city of A'anora, and the Triarchy of free cities, and got to work trying to destroy it. In march 367, they orchestrated a coup-d'état in the city of A'anora to kill the deal, and then 2 months later, decided to invade it and the surrounding region, triggering a war with the Ak'aaran confederation, which they are currently still fighting to a standstill.
Been looking forward to this one since reading Omaren's pieces! ^^
