The Language of Chocolate
The creation of fine chocolate candies is a staple of artisan culture among the Wood Sprites. Through the generations, they have developed hundreds of different presentations for scores of different flavors and recipes.
Rooted in this artesian tradition, the language of chocolates began as a fun and flirty way to send messages between intimate companions. With time and popularity, the meanings expanded until chocolate exchange became the preferred method of inter-strata communication.
It remains so to this day, and many idioms, metaphors, and clichés have arisen based on the common understanding of this language.
Everything, from the chocolate's type (dark vs. milk vs. white), decoration, shape, placement in the box, flavor, filling, to the order in which they were eaten and how the recipient interacts with it before eating; all of it has meaning amongst the strata of Sprites.
A Few Common Idioms
Bite the top off
To try something without finishing; to explore a new person, place, thing, or idea and discover a disliking.
"Eh, she bit the top off. Said it wasn't scary enough."
Eat the center
To accept a proposal; to seal a deal; to sign a contract.
"Aye! And she ate the center!"
Reading the lid
To be indecisive; to have an abundance of choices; to think carefully about a complex matter.
"I'm still reading the lid."
Pinch the sides
To deeply investigate before making a choice. One will often 'read the lid' before 'pinching the sides'.
"She pinched the sides and didn't find enough money."
