Roserest

Where the roses come lie

"The rosy paradise by the sea, this hidden gem of Dewport's is the perfect place to honor our lord Lydos, I've never seen anywhere else with people that have such devotion to the ocean"
- Zarod Tuskwolf
A sleepy fishing village under Dewport's jurisdiction, Roserest provides much of the seafood that the city needs. The first thing a visitor would notice is the gleaming rose statue at the center of the village square, which is clearly well taken care of. A few farms dot the lands around it, but the building that truly takes anyone's breath away on first sight is the manor up a hill overseeing the ocean.   The sound of the waves is ever present, as is the sea salt and sounds of gulls. The closer one gets to the bustling heart of the village, the clearer other sounds become: a blacksmith's hammer, a carpenter's tools, children running and laughing, dogs barking, merchants peddling their wares... truly, this is a small gem of community

Demographics

The biggest part of the population is composed of fishermen, but other professionals that can be found are craftsmen like a blacksmith or carpenters, an innkeeper, some clerics of Lydos, and a few farmers and hunters.

Government

There isn't much in terms of official government. Every two years the village gathers and the people who want to handle that aspect of it can put their names forward for an election. That person then becomes responsible for managing the village and is Roserest's representative during their tenure.

Defences

There are some palisades around the village to protect it. The Watch has recently started constructing - alongside the local carpenters - some walls to fortify the defenses

Industry & Trade

Fishing is the primary trade. The farms around it mostly do subsistence farming, and the hunters complement the economy with their quarries.   Craftsmen that make and repair nets, rods, and anything that helps support fishing are the second most common occupation, alongside shipwrighting and fish processing.

Infrastructure

Inn with stables, blacksmith, shrine to Lydos, general store, carpenter shops, wharf

Guilds and Factions

Fishermen's Consortium

The main guild in the village, which comprises of all the fishermen who joined together to sell their fish at the right prices and have some form of protection, financial and physical, for their trade.

Village Watch

While Roserest doesn't have an official guard or protection services, some hunters banded together to protect it from threats. While it's mostly for defense against wild animals, the Watch has become the village's unofficial law enforcers.

History

No one knows much about the mysterious founder of Roserest. All that remains in the present day is that she was a woman named Rose who found the land that would eventually become the village some 200 years ago, and loved it so much that she built a house right by the sea, so she could live off fishing.   After a few years, a traveler that Rose hosted spread the word that the sea in the area is plentiful and that attracted several people, who themselves built their own homes and lives around the ocean. This migration marked the official creation of Roserest, which was named after its very first inhabitant.   When Rose passed, the village blacksmith forged a beautiful metal sculpture of a single rose, which was placed by the square, as a way to immortalize her.

Points of interest

Ocean's Thorns Inn, Rosy Metalworks, The Rose Statue, Tidal Shrine, Consortium's Seat.

Tourism

Roserest doesn't have a lot of what would be typically considered tourist attractions. The Rose Statue is the only sight that fits in that description.   However, for the fishing aficionados, the village is almost a mandatory visit. Some of the craftsmen enjoy the attention those tourists bring, while others wish to just practice their craft in peace without annoying, meddling strangers.

Geography

Roserest is right by the sea, with a few scattered farms around it.
