Piety and Worship
Worshipping deities is commonplace in Carcerra, with much ritual and tradition centered around appeasing the gods. Common worship by large groups may protect a settlement from disaster or provide bountiful harvest, but nothing is a guarantee when dealing with emotional and powerful cosmic beings. Additionally, simply believing in a god or having personal faith in them does not grant any special benefits.
However, should one devote their religious practices to one specific deity and dedicate their worship to advancing that god’s goals, living by their principles, or otherwise championing their cause, a mortal may earn direct favor.
Often, heroes choose to devote themselves to particular gods either out of piety or self-interest. Sometimes, though, the gods choose champions who might not be entirely willing.
Rejecting the gods completely comes with its own benefits and rewards, but heightened risk in a world hanging in their balance.
Earning and losing Piety can be accomplished many different ways. Piety is tracked through points. Devoting to one god over another gives one point for that deity. Each God has its own details on how to earn/lose piety, and what traits come with it.
*If you gain the ability to cast a spell, your spellcasting ability with that spell is your preferred (or class-specific) ability, choosing from Wisdom, Charisma, and Intelligence.
