In the power vacuum left by Pendræd Armuun’s death, the Bechtlarite Empire nearly imploded. Regional governors and generals vied for control while old noble houses sought to reclaim their lost influence. Amidst this chaos rose Kaedric Thorn, a decorated general and former advisor to Armuun, who rallied the remaining legions under his command and seized Armuun itself, declaring himself Protector of the Empire “until rightful governance could be restored.”
His rule was one of iron discipline and cold calculation. Thorn maintained control through martial law, suppressing rebellions and foreign incursions alike, but failed to provide the ideological unity that had bound the empire under Armuun. Though his leadership preserved the Empire’s structure, his reliance on fear and the military’s loyalty ensured that once he died, the system would collapse again.
