Kylia

From the beginning of Cabochon history, settlements on Kailia have risen and fallen throughout the eras. All of which were human. Most of which were conquered. Some of which were ruined.   The most recent incarnation of Kailia, Kylia emerged as an extension of the Elven Empire into the northern lands of Ochita. Despite its perplexing nature, the city was reforged in wood this time. Becoming more of a trading center instead of a military outpost, Kailia was notoriously multicultral, allowing trade between halfling Pipeglory to flow throughout Ochita and the rest of Cabochon [Major Spoilers] elves, and even more monstrous creatures in the marches. Ruined stonework from around the area was sculpted into the ancient fossilized homewood tree at its center. This comprised the great citadel known Amaranth which still stands compared to the rest of the city.   Nearly a decade ago, Kailia suffered a great tragedy nearing that of Mephistal; the whole of the city was burnt to the ground in an event called the Panic. The origins of these fires remain unsolved to this day although many theories blame foul play on the ruling elves. All that remained of the city are burnt timbers and a scorched Amaranth, now less clashing in its charred patina. With its destruction, the lordship of the land became vacant and the borderlands grew more dangerous.

Enter Kylia

Less than a day's hike from the old town square, a new settlement has emerged on its ouskirts. Renamed pronounced Ky-lia with the vowel shift, 'Kylia' sprung forth as a refugee camp and hamlet in the aftermath of the Panic. Harbin Westerly, a banker from Kylia, helped to set up the Hamlet within a year past the panic appointing himself as mayor. Despite the small economic return, life did not change when the lordship was purchased by Aberto de Bombalona. Harbin would eventually petition the Alliance of Lords themselves to send a more formal policing force outside of the constabulary he set up. The Unfettered were sent to protect the town and watch Drake River for incursions of hostile wildlife south across Drake River. After only three weeks, the Unfettered would renounce their attachment to the Alliance of Lords and occupied the city as a gang wearing red cloaks. Run by a wizard, Glassstaff, the eponymous Redcloaks limited outside trade and set up a protection racket. Grista Rockseeker, owner of the recently built 'The Wreck' tavern, employed a local berylfolk refugee to watch Drake River for orcish incursion as the Redcloaks were interested only in the hamlet itself. Sister Garyelle and Sildar, two Alliance fixers, were soon dispatched to solve the Redcloak issue. Three traveling adventurers were deputized soon capturing and dismantling the 'redbranded ruffians' grasp on the township.

Rest and Revival

When the contract with the halflings expired in 5 AH, the Unfettered sent an enterprising agent of theirs Reed to set up an expedition into the empty lands they left behind. Based out of the Old Tres manor, Reed established the Sole's Rest from which is expeditionary crew were based.

History

Prior to the most recent incarnation, Kailia's size and importance has ebbed throughout the ages. Considered a golden age for the settlement, the era of Elemental Evil saw exponential growth in the surrounding area. Bizarre ruins of stone dot the Northern Wylds and are thought to predate halfling occupation of the area. Many of the stone ruins directly surrounding the city were gathered up in its last iteration to build the Amaranth citadel built at the throat of Drake Lake. Nearby ruins that remain untouched are said to contain unspeakable evil or perhaps something much worse.

Architecture

Kailia was most recently comprised of wooden structures. These highly flammable structures only exacerbated the wildfires which wracked the city now ruined city. What remains is the citadel Amaranth. Named for its menagerie of different colors and its pedal-like spires, Amaranth is now muted by soot and remains abandoned. A few floating docks along Drake Lake remain untouched by flame but have mostly rotted due to poor maintenance.

Geography

Kailia is situated directly adjacent to Drake Lake, a large lake which gets its name from its odd shape. The chain of mountains due north of the city are often cloaked in snow and icy mist. Frequent earthquakes in the area spawn avalanches that prevent permanent mining operations.
