Government

Aldis is the seat of power for the Kingdom of the Blue Rose, but administration of the city itself is handled semi-independently from matters of national governance. Nobles are appointed by the Sovereign to preside over districts within the city, forming the Civic Council, which in turn elects a High Seneschal to lead the council (sometimes referred to as "Lord/Lady Seneschal"). The Civic Council oversees most administrative tasks for the city, including infrastructure maintenance, urban planning, and record-keeping.

Infrastructure

Aldis has a complex and extensive network of water and sewer infrastructure, powered by arcana.

Major thoroughfares in Aldis are made of smooth stone, with stone-shapers periodically employed to re-grade and repair any streets that may be damaged or worn. Side streets may be cobbled, while some paths and walking trails are surfaced with gravel or, on the fringes of the city, left as bare dirt.

The city also contains numerous parks, plazas, squares, and other public spaces.

Districts

The city is divided into five wards, each containing numerous neighborhoods.

  • The High Ward, containing many government buildings and luxurious residences
  • The Lake Ward, a center of maritime activity
  • The Middle Ward, home to numerous artisans and skilled professionals
  • The Lower Ward, a densely populated district with many working-class families
  • The Outer Ward, encompassing much of the heavy industry and agricultural pursuits of the city

Architecture

The architectural styles of Aldis are as varied as its people. The Palace and other buildings in the High Ward are predominantly built from white and blue marble; elsewhere in the city, limestone masonry, clay bricks, and half-timbered construction are more common. Plaster is commonly used on exterior and interior walls, and may be painted in bright colors, decorated with murals or bas reliefs, or left unpainted. Roofs are generally composed of ceramic tiles or, occasionally, slate shingles; thatch and wood shingles are not used in new construction due to the risk of fire in such a densely populated city.    The appetite for novelty in Aldin culture has resulted in innovative and eclectic approaches to architecture, with several neighborhoods in the city developing distinctive styles of their own. Cardamom, in the Middle Ward, is known for its brightly-painted and heavily-ornamented "painted cake" architecture, while Red Bluff, in the Lower Ward, is named after the red sandstone masonry used in numerous tenement buildings in the area.

Climate

Aldis's weather is generally mild year-round. Due to evaporation from Lake Vash, hot summer days can have high humidity, and on rare occasions when winter temperatures dip below freezing, ice and snow can be observed.
