Chan Trading Co. -post convergance (Ch-an)

During the time of the convergence The Chan Trading Co. officially withdrew the majority of their caravans and ships. Anyone who wished to return to the mainland until things settled down and trade was more viable, could do so. Those who chose to stay in their Offshore Branches could do so and would receive an increased stipend as hazard pay, and would not be required to submit an accounting of their cost and profits until official business was reinstated. They would also be granted an extra contingent of military personal to help protect their borders and assets.   Any who wanted to come home were welcomed back in their family lands or if that was not an option were given housing in the town or city of their choice until reassignment was available. those on the mainland focused on developing new tools to help reestablish trade and there was a boom in innovations on ship and land vehicle designs. Just before the convergence the company spent many recourses buying up available wood, metal and other raw goods while selling any perishables they could.   Meanwhile any who would take the time to notice would find familiar ships flying no colors and moving fast, only carrying partial loads. Those who were willing to volunteer worked with the devotes of Chauntea to deliver foodstuff and supplies to the common peoples affected by the conquests of the war gods. These caravans moved quickly with extra armed guard. Speed became the focus over making good deals and on return trips they often moved people from war torn areas in to safer places. though the company had officially withdrawn it did not abandon the people it worked with and thus maintained good relations for when trade networks could be reestablished.   After what has become known as "The Red year" The Chan trading co re-emerged publicly on the world stage, bringing with it new methods of transportation and goods that had been hard to get in the interim when the established trade routes withdrew.

Structure

Chan trading Co. is unique as a nation, its structure is more like that of a very large corporation. The power-structure consists of two major tiers, each with their own sub divisions. The hierarchy of each sub division is largely controlled by the noble houses. However nobility within Chan is biased more on financial success than bloodline. Because of this the noble houses can change year to year. One exception to this are the 35 original noble houses, whose place in the hierarchy is secured in the charter.
The two tiers are The Home Office and Multiple Offshore Branches. presented below is an overview of the structure of Chan. This multi layered and complicated system can only truly be understood by one who has studied it in great detail.

The Home Office
The home office is located in the Cha mainland and forms the main governing body of the company. The Home office determines the goals and regulations for both the mainland and the Offshore Branches. The structure of the home office consists of two major branches the Court of Proprietors and the Court of Directors
The Court of Proprietors
The court of Proprietors consists of the Original 35 nobles houses that founded the trading Company. Each of the houses were involved in the initial investment and as such have given themselves permanent voting rights regarding company matters. At the beginning of each year the Court of proprietors approves the budgets and proposed plans from the court of directors. Additionally they can choose to replace remove or relocate the members of the court of directors or the local offices as they see fit. Such alterations are decided on by a blind vote during one of their meetings. The Court of Proprietors meets four times a year to check in on the state of things and make any pressing decisions. Emergency meetings can be called but it is highly frowned upon and only done during very drastic circumstances.

The Court of Directors
The Court of Directors is made up of a Governor, Deputy Governor, 24 company directors and 7 special committees, each one dealing with a specific branch of the company.
The Governor, Deputy governor and heads of the 7 committees are chosen by the company directors, with approval by the Court of proprietors. The Company directors are chosen directly by the Proprietors during the first meeting of the year. This high in the hierarchy the positions tend to be relatively stable however financial failing, mishandling of Chan assets or utter social disgrace can see someone loose their position or be sent out to one of the offshore branches. These positions are highly coveted and thee is much competition among the noble houses to be elevated to one of these stations. Among the members of the Home office being sent to an offshore branch is considered a disgrace, even if it looks like a promotion.
  • The Governor and Deputy Governor are the public face of the nation. They jointly control the largest territory in the nation and are the ones who both take the public's praise and disapproval. They have the least stable positions in the Court of directors and can be removed anytime the Company directors see fit. These two are often a married pair with many getting married when accepting the office to build stronger inter-familial ties.
  • Each company director controls a territory consisting of several towns and villages. They serve as the lord of the territory collecting taxes and determining the direction the territory will take. Within their territory they are mostly autonomous so long as their actions do not go against the current regulations. Each quarter they meet in the capital to give an accounting of their territory and discuss plans with the other members of the court.
  • Under each company director are usually a number of minor lords who are in charge of individual towns and villages.
  • The 7 special committees are each dedicated to one facet involved in running such a large corporate nation. the 7 committees are: Accounting, Buying, Correspondence, Shipping, Warehousing, Military and Diplomatic. Every of the major city on the mainland has an area dedicated to the offices of the 7 committees and their main office is located in the capital. The committee offices work with and report to the Director of the territory they are ultimately considered part of a separate national entity as opposed to part of the Directors territory.

The Offshore Branches
The offshore branches consists of the small territories throughout the world that Chan has established. Each has a main city and any offshoot offices required to maintain its individual trade routes. The Offshore branch is run by a President who is chosen by the Court of directors. On paper the title is roughly the same a director but it is often viewed as a less desirable station. Each president is advised by a council consisting of members from the 7 committees, minor nobles from the host country and any Chan nobles they see fit. The president and their advisors are responsible for managing the territory as well as establishing and maintaining a local trade network. Twice a year they travel back to Chan to make a reporting and receive any specific instructions from the Directors. Beyond that, so long as they keep to the tenants put forth by the Court, they are free to run their branch as they see fit. This gives them a large amount of freedom but also places the burden of maintaining a profitable operation entirely on them.

Culture

On surface the culture of Chan is all about money and making a profit however that is only the superficial layer of Chan-ite culture. The overall culture of Chan can be largely divided in to two sections. Those of interior Chan-ites and those of Exterior chan-ites.
Interior Chan
Interior Chan has retained much of the original cultural undertones of the original Cha people. The first people of Cha were the gnomes and halflings, they established a home on the continent as a sanctuary from the larger races who often overlooked them or found them easy to prey on. The district of Karkolohk (kar-ko-loh-k) is the historical location of these first settlements and much of their original culture has been preserved, it also serves as the seat of the Governors of the Court of Directors. Many of the more westwardly departments also keep to the older traditions. Within the interior gnomish is the predominate language though common is wide spread as well. Those who live here often mix in gnomish words even when speaking common, making for an interesting mixed dialect.   Buildings in the interior tends to be smaller and at least in the towns and villages built in to the ground, often a town will be mistaken for a cluster of smaller hills. The Cities are a bit more varied in size and construction but many buildings still feature underground sections. Wood and river stone are popular building materials and even the underground spaces are fully furnished and built out. Furniture tends to be light and easy to move with a focus on comfort and craftmanship. Many pillows and soft places to sit are common and a piece of chan-ite craft will last a life time.   In these areas the most important things are family, innovation, education and joyful living. part of the reason Chan has so many noble families is because of the importance placed on family ties and loyalty, without ones family all the riches in the world mean nothing. Innovation is highly prized, as a small people often overlooked by a world that has become geared to the larger races the small folk have had to come up with ways to adapt and be notices or alternatively to disappear from sight. hand in hand with innovation is education, Gnomes are taught from a young age that the truest joy is that of discovery and learning the truth of something. As such centers of learning are very popular places. The halflings made sure that the simple pleasure of a life well lived and seeped in joyful pursuits was integrated in to the way of life in early Cha. While there is still plenty of wheeling and dealing that goes on and keeping the great gears of their trading empire moving are still integral parts of day to day life they are not the end all be all as many outsiders would presume. Handicrafts, arts and food are prized and the more variety one has in either the better.   Within the interior fashion varies broadly with personal taste and a lesser extent profession, Overall earthy colors and sturdy fabrics are preferred and shoes are entirely optional and when worn tend more towards sandals or sturdy boots. Aprons featuring many pockets are a very common accessory, even being worn over the finer clothing of the nobility. Emblems of ones house can be worn when visiting other departments but with in ones hometown are rarely needed. it is not uncommon for people to work in some sign of their trade in to their outfit either as an accessory or a design. if a person has managed to produce something truly innovative they are bound to have something on their person to commemorate their invention.   The upper class tends to have a finer version of the usual day to day clothes. They tend to have nicer fabrics and more varied clothing. Special cloth woven with magic infused fibers is especially prized. The type of infusion can vary from practical to purely cosmetic and the latest trend is large hoop skirts that can depict moving scenes usually chosen from the wearers favorite books, plays or songs. Another trend is clothing that can change to suit the situation. Caught in the rain by surprise? Never fear this over coat can be transformed in to an umbrella!
Exterior Chan
Exterior Chan is a strange amalgamation of all the different cultures that the trading company interacts with and their own normal culture. These areas are mostly found on the eastern side of the continent and are most prevalent along the coast. The mix of races is more prevalent and common is the predominate language, though it is still sprinkled with gnomish words and turns of phrase. The traditional values of inner Chan still run deep in the exterior but they have become mixed with the pursuit of novelty and exploration. here education is less focused on crafts and general interest and more focused on learning about other cultures and ways of life, the focus of innovation is finding ways to get new places and making connections with new people. The people of Chan learned early on that having something someone wants is a fine way to get a foot in the door and make friend and they have been fine tuning that process ever since. there is less of a focus on the deep family ties and more on establishing new roots in new places.   Traditional low houses mix with standard dwellings form all over, many larger buildings feature sections or accommodations made with the small folk in mind. A wide mix of building material is used and the cities or larger towns rarely have any cohesive look to them. Underground spaces are still prized and often built more to small folk standards than the buildings above. Booming market places and a faster ever changing pace are a stark contrast to the quieter way of life in inner Chan.   Here standard Chan fashion is decorated with pieces from other cultures, having finely crafted accessories from the different places you've traveled or people you've met is the height of fashion. Many younger people learn to make trinkets and small accessories that can be traded in the lands they visit. Having a diverse group of friends and acquaintances is highly desired and many wide eyed youngsters set out on the path of an adventurer from these shores.   These trends are echoed in the offshore branches with each one integrating their favorite parts of their host land in to their day to day life.

Demography and Population

Chan is a country on the Cha Continent The Continet is covered in Tropical seasonal forests, rain-forest and wetlands (roughly a northern south American climate)   Yearly rainfall is high and there is a distinct cycle of rainy and dry seasons. (Wet seasons: Fire-seek---Flock-time Dry season: Reaping ----Patch-wall) Temperatures range from 60-80F through out the year. with an average of 76   The warm temperatures and plentiful water make this continent very bio-diverse and full of natural resources. Exotic plants and animals abound and the Illusion magic infusing the land makes venturing in to the wilds dangerous.   The Landmass of the Cha Contient is roughly 328k mi2 Or roughly the size of Spain.

Military

The military of Chan is managed by the Committee of Military matters. one of the special committees of the court of directors. The military is largely volunteer but each noble house traditionally sends at least one younger son to serve. Those who want to see the world and not get stuck behind a desk join the military. Additionally any locals from the territories around the Offshore branches are welcome to join the military so long as they swear allegiance to Chan over their home territory. Outpacing the army of Chan is the navy. Shipbuilding and sailing are vital parts of Chan and thus are highly important positions with good pay.   Members of the military are well paid and often receive free room and board when traveling with in Chan lands, military service is one way someone from a non-noble house can endeavor to move up the social ranks.   One thing the military forces of Chan have shown is their willingness to adapt new ways of fighting in to their training. Each time they interact with a new people they endeavor to learn their fighting styles. Traditional Chan attics rely on surprise and guerilla warfare, also on making sure your enemy underestimates you. this is aided by the peoples natural talent with illusions and has led to the capture of many bandits, pirates and raiders over the years.
Falling under the Committee of military maters is the offical Chan adventureing guild the Sword of Fate and Fortune. While registeration with the guild is by no means required to go adventureing it is highly encouranged with members reciveing better pay for completed jobs and first choice of high paying jobs. With many prminate buisnesses needing a steady influx of intersting or rare materials the best members of the guild can end up with steady work or private sponsorship.

Technological Level

The cultural focus on innovation ,education and a love of magic has led to a strange mixture of the technological and magical. Much of Chan has a steampunk feel, with magic and mechanical parts mixing together. Gnomish inventions are known to be dramatic and over the top with lots of gears and moving parts. Steam power was developed during the convergence but has not reached full practicality yet.

Religion

The gnomish and Halfing pantheons are known for getting along and sharing many similarities. As such both The Lords of the golden hills and Yondalla's Children are worshiped all over Chan. Additional Tymora the moon goddess and Waukeen are fairly prevalent.
The Lords of the golden hills
Garl Glittergold, greater god of luck, humor, trickery, and gems; the leader of the gnomish pantheon. Gelf Darkhearth, god of frustration and destruction. Brother to Garl. Callarduran Smoothhands, intermediate god of stone, mining, and the svirfneblin. Segojan Earthcaller, intermediate god of death, earth and nature (in the Underdark). Flandal Steelskin, intermediate god of smithing and metalworking. Baervan Wildwanderer, intermediate god of nature, travel, and forests. Sheyanna Flaxenstrand, intermediate goddess of love, beauty, and passion. Baravar Cloakshadow, lesser god of illusion and deception. Gaerdal Ironhand, lesser god of vigilance, defense, and combat. Nebelun the Meddler, god of invention, construction and luck; in the Realms an aspect of Gond. Rill Cleverthrush, lesser god of invention and the sky. Urdlen, lesser god of bloodlust, evil, hatred, and destruction. The Glutton, lesser god of disaster and greed.
Yondalla's Children
Yondalla, a greater goddess and the leader of the halfling pantheon. She was additionally a nature goddess. Sheela Peryroyl, an intermediate goddess of agriculture, love, and weather. Urogalan, demigod of the earth, death, and the halfling dead. Arvoreen, god of defense, guardians, and vigilance; he was often regarded by others as a war god. Brandobaris, god of thievery, stealth, and curiosity. Cyrrollalee, goddess of friendship, trust, hospitality, and home.

Agriculture & Industry

Some Halfing culinary specialties
  • Belbuck: A translucent green, spearmint beer.
  • Blue eyes: A blue grape grown for wines. They grew in halfling-sized clusters.
  • Orthin: This buttery yellow cheese made from goat's and sheep's milk was named after its long-dead inventor. It was somewhat like brie from Earth except not as runny and it had a very thin rind.
  • Luiren spring cheese: A cheese/drug that only had an effect on halflings.
  • Luiren's Best: A black-as-ink, very sweet stout.
  • Rivengut: a notoriously strong whiskey drink favored by halflings and other people of the realms

Special Products
  • Spell Silk: Special fabric woven from the silk cocoons of Arcan Moths. The silk can be pure (masterwork) or a blend of materials. Items woven with spell silk are easier to infuse with magical properties making it ideal for magical garments.
  • Alchemical materials/ rare flowers/ rare creatures: The tropical environment of much of Chan makes it home to a variety of plants and animals found no where else in the world.

Trade & Transport

  • The Mole Train:Within the mainland of Chan a complex network of underground tunnels connects each of the districts. This transportation system is known as the Mole Train. Giant Moles have been fitted with special harnesses that allow a rider to direct them and a train of special cargo cars with sled like bottoms are pulled behind them. The moles tremor sense helps prevent any collisions in the vast network of tunnels and any cave-ins can simply be dug thru until crews can come repair the tunnel.
  • Swamp Skimmers : Swamp skimmers are large flat bottom boats designed in such a way that they can be propelled across the top of the water by a burst of air, usually provided by a special bellows or an air elemental. They were developed to skim over the roots and other hazards in the swamp waters around the Chan coast.

Currency
When dealing with other Chan-ites , especially those in the same village or trade an honor and bartering system is largely used. Fair deals are expected and to go back on one is seen as a huge fax pa. In fact it is seen as a mark of disfavor to insist on currency exchange when dealing with someone you know. Among the common people day to day interactions consists much more of a friendly exchange of goods or services with currency being saved for strangers or extremely large purchases.   To outsiders the attitude is very different. Trade is almost always handed in coin or goods and they are known for their ruthless haggling skills. This additute is starting to take more of a hold even with in domestic deals in the exterior portion of Chan but is still largely reserved for dealing with outsiders.
