Jormund's Tunnel
A massive cave system that snakes its way beneath the sea floor of the New World. It was first launched 150 years ago by Jormund Stormforged. In a bid to preserve the United Dwarf Federation's wealth and power, he proposed that rather than sailing across the New World, they could instead colonise it by burrowing beneath it. Many thought him mad, but when Jormund came into possession of an Apparatus of Kwalish armed with an enormous drill, he took it as a sign from Moridan. He set out to perform the largest dwarven digging operation in history, taking with him an entire city's worth of workers, their families, farm animals, farm hands and various other specialists. As they dug, a few workers would stay behind to set up frontier towns and outposts to form a supply chain to the surface and rear underground animals and crops to sustain the main digging force should the tunnel collapse and leave them with no contact with the surface.
Years passed. Then decades. Then over a century. Children were born and raised in the tunnel. They grew up to become diggers. They died in the tunnel, never once seeing sunlight. Jormund himself was killed by a collapse some 50 years ago, leaving his son, Jormund Junior, to take charge. They remain completely unaware of the collapse of the Federation, the resulting Civil War, nor the slaughter of their entire clan at the hands of Pirate Lord Jira.
Being this deep, it's only natural that the malevolent Void would take notice, as the dwarves have dug fasr closer to something far more intelligent than they understand...
