The Vikani

The Vikani are a nomadic sea-faring people who can be found throughout the Isles. A hardy folk, they were one of the first new arrivals to the Isles after the Sundering, and are probably one of the most travelled. Whilst they have a central hub of sorts in Seaward the majority of their people spend their whole lives at sea. Vikani children are born and raised at sea, and most Vikani die at sea, their ships are their homes.   Most Vikani make their living through scavenging or trade. Due to their nomadic nature the Vikani often encounter undiscovered islands with long lost civilisations or treasures upon them. Sometimes it may just be the discovery of a new food type, or the location of a particularly good fishing spot, as even knowledge is a form of currency. Vikani sea charts are a highly sought after commodity, though they don't always mark all their discoveries on their maps, especially those that they can exploit for themselves.   Some Vikani vessels are family owned and these ones tend to be traders as this is safer for having children on board. Some vessels are owned co-operatively, though there will still be a ship's captain appointed, and many of these tend to be the ones who take on the more dangerous expeditions. Every Vikani vessel has a captain regardless of it's size, and every captain has a say in any major decision which affects the Vikani people as a whole.   The Vikani orginally left their homes across the sea due to volanic eruptions which caused a huge amount of devastation to their homeland. Many of them took to the seas in a bid to find some safe harbour, and some of them made their way to the Isles. However the Isles had undergone their own, far more devastating, transformation and was just now settling down into something that resembled civilisation, at least in some parts. Almost out of food and water they were unable to turn back and so had to make the most out of their new home.
