Grei was, by all accounts, a clever woman. She always knew she would be clever, of course. Being a woman— and a lady at that. The youngest daughter— the most reliable daughter— she had always been her mother’s favorite. From her freedom from the womb to her coming of age she was invariably meant to be Lady Ríd’s perfect little heir. She wasted no extra time studying the blade or following around generals as the older girls did. No, she kept to her studies of law and politics and countenance. She barely needed a knife to ruin a competitor when her sharp wit could make them bleed, and her honey-sweet wisdom could leave them singing her praises, their ingenuous heartstrings wrapped around her perfectly even nails. So of course she was clever. She made comment on this fact not to gloat, but rather because it was true. A weak man leads with arrogance and pride but Grei knew power— power thicker than blood and plentiful enough to drown in. Although, it took very little of anything to be truly destructive, as long as enough pressure was applied, a fact that Grei herself knew all too well.

"It sounded exhausting, so Grei was glad she never bothered with friends. A good child of the empire was useful, not amiable. And certainly not amorous, unless for proper reason, which was a stance Jemin and her felt much the same on. They used to tease the other girls, who whispered of private letters and charming smiles and empty military bunks, and ponder why one would waste such time on passing pleasures. If she felt any sort of funny little way she was sure to keep it to herself, and she’d never spied the marks of love on Jemin’s face so Grei was certain the other girl had learned the skills of subtlety even better than she. She wished her friend would teach her how she feigned indifference so well."While Grei grew up reading romance fables and fantasizing about boys, her interest was not shared by Ozra, and while encouraged at first by her parents as it became clear that she would be thrust into the role of The Mitigator she was guided to avoid personal attachments and focus on strategic allegiances.
