Liminal Realm

The In-Between

The mortal mind cannot fully process the Liminal Realm, perceiving it as a featureless expanse of soft glowing ectoplasmic nothingness. Unlike the hazy emptiness that defines the Ethereal Realm, the In-Between is perceived as a solid universe, with an ever-present "bottom" and an inaccessible "ceiling". Beings within the In-Between are subject to a weak directional gravity, with matter being lightly drawn to the "bottom". Distance and speed are, likewise, less-concrete within the Liminal Realm. One can traverse eternally and never know, with any certainty, if they have moved at all. Powerful magics capable of manipulation unprocessed Aether is required to travel across the Liminal Realms with any degree of success.

The Liminal Realm has no native lifeforms, but is a surprising hospitable space for any alien species. Beings require no food, sleep, or even to breathe within the Liminal Realm, and no time passes for those within. Any being inside the Liminal Realm exist in a state of material stasis. However, the In-Between is relentlessly hostile to the minds of all those who wander its "boundaries". The absolute lack of anything can drive even the most stalwart of minds to snap. Only the intrepid Astelai, known throughout Existence as the Travellers, have adapted to endure the unique hazards of the In-Between.
