City Watch of King's Landing
The City Watch of King's Landing, also known as the gold cloaks, are the defenders of the city of King's Landing (including the Red Keep) and the enforcers of the law, sworn only to the Iron Throne. The Watch falls under the bailiwick of the Master of Laws .
There are three sets of barracks for the City Watch: the East Barracks by the Dragon Gate, the West Barracks near Cobbler's Square and the Gate of the Gods, and one beneath the Tower of the Hand in the Red Keep.
Structure
The overall leader of the entire City Watch is the Commander, title currently held by Prince Aenys Blackfyre, under him are captains of the Watch, including those of the City's gates, the twenty Knights Pursuer, the Master of Charge of the Royal Hunters as well as the Fleet Magistrate of the Gilded Sails.
Assets
The City Watch wear cloaks, usually made of heavy wool, dyed gold. They are equipped with mail armor, iron cudgels, iron spears, dirks, and occasionally longswords. Their armor, boots, and gloves are black. The officers (such as the captains of the gates of the city) wear black breastplates ornamented with four golden disks. They can be used as guards, foot soldiers, or in some cases, as mounted lancers.
Since the creation of the Gilded Sails the Watch also possesses a small fleet of 20 longships.
History
After the Great Blackfyre Rebellion Ser Symon Strong was named to command the City Watch by King Daemon I Blackfyre and served at his post for over a decade.
During the assault of rebel forces led by Lord Stevron Vance the Gold Cloaks fought in the defense of the city under the overall command of King Daemon I Blackfyre. Ser Strong took grievous wounds in the battle, but managed to recover and was granted lands by King Aemon I Blackfyre as a reward for his years of service.
By decree of Hand of the King Gormon Peake Prince Aenys Blackfyre was named as the next Commander of the Watch.
Unsatisfied with the effectiveness of the Watch and the effect it was having on crime, Prince Aenys and Lord Gormon Peake created together more specialized units within the Watch, were they the Knights Pursuer, the Gilded Sails and the Royal Hunters.
