Portuguese São Diogo

São Diogo or Portuguese São Diogo (officially the Province of São Diogo) was a Martian colony administered by Portugal. Located to the north of the Hellas Planitia, the colony served as the plane's main hub for most Portuguese-speaking migramts who immigrated from earth.

Culture

The cultural makeup of São Diogo was primarily made up of Portuguese cultures from across the lusophone back on earth, with Brazil and Portugal being the biggest influences by far.

History

The colony had its origins in the capital city of Maria Cidade after its foundation in 2188. Beginning around 2193, the city's population would begin to settle in regions outside of the city itself, with simple roads being constructed to connect the capital with the newly-founded towns. On the October of 2196, the various towns would now find themselves under the administration of Maria Cidade, with the civilians of the various towns wanting their cities independent from the capital's administration. On May 8th, 2297, the city of Maria Cidade would vote in favor of reinstalling independent administration to the various towns, but at the same time, also establishing the colony of São Diogo as an integral territory of Portugal. Later on the 13th, the colony of Portuguese São Diogo would be officially established, with Maria Cidade being made its capital. Followung its establisment, the colony would continue its growth in population and influence, and even territory in the coming decades, as new settlements were built and already existing ones were expanded with the influx of new civilians. The growth of the colony would remain mostly normal, that is until the Great Oil Crisis of the 2230s. The effects of the crisis would first affect the colony greatly around 2237, where the massive economic collapse would spell disaster for the already developing colony. By the early 2240s, the economy of São Diogo would be stuck in a state of decay, with many citizens attempting to emigrate out of the colony and into less impovrished regions, including the adjacent colonies as well. The colonial government, however, attempted to curb the emigration out and to reestablish the flow of immagration that was present until the economic collapse. To make matters worse, due to the unstability from the crisis, the colonial government would enact various policies to help minimalize the chaos, and even began to descend into hostility with its surrounding colonies as well, especially with the English colony of New Kinross. Eventually, this hostility would result in a long-standing rivalry between São Diogo and New Kinross, a rivalry that would lead to the quick yet consequencial São Diogan War in the August of 2257, a war that would end in an English victory. Following the loss in the war, the English would demand reparations in the form of territory, which was eventually reluctantly succeded by the São Diogan government.

Territories

The primary location of São Diogo lies inbetween the regions of Terra Sabaea and Tyrrhena Terra, and is almost entirely contained in the lapygia quadrangle. By the time of the late 2260s, the colony would expand to include other regions such as the area above Hellas Planitia.
