The Republic of Perendur
The Republic of Perendur is the most successful nation to emerge from among the colonies in Nekoti after the Great Rebellion. It’s troops have seen action from the The Roaneida Coast to the North and the Smyrna Archipelago to the South.
Further inland there are the Frontier Territory , settled by people attempting to get as far away from Imperial authority as possible. Trappers, miners, and small time farmers live here, the only true settlements being the Trade City Forts run by the Federal Army and staffed by the Rangers
Structure
The Republic is comprised of two parts, the The Coastal States states along the Bay of Perendur and the Frontier Territory which lines the outside shell of the nation. The Coastal States are divided into districts of towns and villages. These districts are grouped into counties which are then grouped together to form the state, each state bearing the same name as its capital. State government and state capital government are one entity.
The Coastal States
In the Coastal States each village, district, county, and state has its own mayor who is elected by the voice of the people. Those elected are referred to as Mayors, District Mayors, County Mayors, and Lord Mayors respectively. Elections are held on a continual basis, it is likely that no matter where in Perendur you may find yourself there is likely to be an election of some kind be it for the local town crier or the town sheriff. The Frontier Territory
This region is inhabited by a diverse mixture of colonial ethnic groups and native tribes who helped create the Republic of Perendur but wanted no part in the rapidly urbanization of the Coastal States. When the the challenge of dividing the vast mountainous region among the Coastal States almost led to civil war it was decided instead that the region would be an autonomous zone under the management of the President of the Republic. Trading and shipment of the region's resources is restricted to trading forts run by the Frontiersmen , a semi active regional militia trained by the Rangers that reports directly to the President of the Republic. The Mayoral Congress
Once a year the Lord Mayors of each Coastal State meet together in the national capital of Huriton for the Mayoral Congress. During this time the Lord Mayors debate and vote on laws that apply to all states and A delegation from the Frontier Territory represents the region's interests in the Mayoral Congress. The delegation leader is chosen every year by the President of the Republic. This delegation leader, known as the Frontier Chief, in turn may elect as many individuals to the delegation as they feel they need to defend the Frontier Territory's interests. However the delegation as a whole has one vote, and the Frontier Chief has final say in its use. While the Frontier Chief is typically considered to be the voice of the President in the Mayoral Congress in the event of a tie vote the Vice President is authorized to cast a tie breaking vote.Assets
Military
The Perendurians distrust standing armies and therefore keep none, instead taking pride in their local militias. Every man is expected to answer the call to drill with their local militia that rotates its active duty roster every year. Elected officials, Rangers, and educated members of the community serve as officers. Perendur only has two permanent military organizations, the Rangers and the Republican Navy. The Rangers, most of whom come from the Frontier Territory are what constitutes the Republic's main ground forces and the personal guardsmen/army of the President of the Republic. In times of peace the Rangers are responsible for land border defense and training the local militias who have been activated for drills. However their numbers are few due to constitutional limitations and so when the need arises it is more common to see them lead local militias alone or in pairs rather than see them acting independently in their own units. The Navy of the Republic is substantially larger than the rangers, due to the vast distances they need to patrol and safeguard. The Republican Navy maintains three fleets at all times. One to guarantee coastal defence, one to guard Perendurian merchant vessels, and one reserved to support the other two or conduct punitive naval operations against enemies such as the Pirate Kingdom or the The Dominion of Jethyr.
