The Underking

Deep within the winding tunnels and caverns of the Underdark lies a force of nature akin to the sun rising. A dormant brood of essence with inevitability to rise once again centuries after centuries. The Underking is not a person, more an enigma. A bundle of darkness that grows with influence and power over and over again. This entity cannot be slain, nor banished, nor imprisoned, but it can be defeated. Drawing on the memories and fears of the denizens of the Underdark the Underking is said to slowly gain power enough to create vessals, nay avatars of the dark. These puppets are used by the Underking to carry out what is needed for the darkness to gain more influence.   Like a demonic patron, or divine god, the Underking can bestow gifts to those willing to provide the Underking with what it needs. And what it needs are more vessels to do it's bidding. Particular vessels are strong enough to fend off the evil influence, but those who can't are at the whims of whatever this dark evil desires. The role of the Underking is to act as the ruler of the Underdark making sure no one but the acting Underking gains enough power to take control.   Former Vessels of the Underking: Netherbane Current Vessel of the Underking: Kriss Morigan

In Literature

In Art

The Underking has had countless depictions in the past, a knight of all black armor, a thousand legged monster of incredible size, a swirling mass of darkness and energy. All of these accounts of the Underking have been carved in stone, painted in tapestries, molded from clay, all from centuries ago to the present day.
