Daran Island
Daran Island, also refered to simply as Daran or Alter Bay, is a crescent shaped piece of land north-west of the main island. Although the name Alter Bay has been falling out of use over the past few centuries, in a few very isolated places it is still the common name.
Situated quite far away from the main island, Daran Island is infamous for its inhospitality. The winds from the open ocean can get quite strong resulting in immense waves and currents. Both the wind and the waters might change the landscape of the island regularly. Floods are a common occurance as well as the wind corroding everything in its way.
The few inhabitants of the island need to adapt to the frequent change of the island. The most obvious adaptation any outsider would find is the housing. Instead of building upwards the houses are dug into the ground to avoid the wind and its corrosion. This leads to a different problem: flood damage. To avoid such damages there usually is a second layer dug beneath the inhabited spaces to make room for water. This doesnt prevent damages from the major floods but it helps with the very common smaller floods.
Travel to Daran Island can be difficult depending on the means of travel available to adventurers and merchants. The most obvious and cheapest way to get to Daran is by boat. Usually there is no travel-opportunity between the main island and Daran. One possibility is to ask the fisherman of Greenray - a neighboring island - who sometimes fish between the two islands for passage. Even if you find a fisherman willing to take your party it might cost a pretty penny since the passage still takes the better part of a day. Going by boat on your own is a risky endeavor. You need a lot of knowledge to handle the strong currents, ever-changing winds, and if you are unlucky some of the bigger and hungry creatures of the sea. Good preparation is necessary for this passage. Airtravel is fairly easy as the strong winds usually dont reach too high and can be avoided by going above. Since airtravel is increadibly rare it is hardly a viable option.
On Daran Island is only one settlement which itself is called Daran.

History
In the past Daran Island had a bit more impact. Expeditions trying to explore the ocean and beyond had their last stop on the continent of Azaran on Daran Island. In the more recent past no such expeditions have been launched and as such the importance of the island became less and less.
