Dumein Dominion (doo-mine)
Known across the world as one of the most militaristic societies, the Dominion has recently realized their long-held goal of expanding their territory to cover all of eastern Ayndrinor. What started off in a small city on the eastern coast managed to slowly take trading towns over several centuries before blitzing Everyn and the rest of the region in less than five years.
Travelers who visit outlying towns such as Velchester, Zennfield, or Crossfeld would be dumbfounded to learn of the militarism the nation - now a province of the Everyn Federation - is known for. Those towns are relatively normal in most times, except the occasional troop movement through town, and are not overly repressed or uptight. The capital city of Dumein Keep is a different story entirely. All men between ages 16 and 30 are conscripted into the military and spend every day training and drilling, when they are not further afield fighting wars to expand the nation's borders or keep the new peace the Federation has created. Women, therefore, are the everyday workers in the city and enjoy far more equality than women in most other areas. The swampy city is somewhat dreary and plain to most outsiders, though this has started to change with an influx of new ideas and people in the aftermath of the war.
While the new political entity in the east may be the Everyn Federation, no one makes the mistake of thinking that sprawling metropolis is actually the seat of power. The emperor may conduct daily business in Everyn, but he lives in Dumein Keep and counts himself as a Dumeiner above all else. The naming of the new nation was strategic, to distract and deflect animosity from the Dominion, even though that is the true power that conquered everyone and united the entirety of eastern Ayndrinor.
Structure
The thegn sits at the top of the entire Federation and also manages everything within the Dumein province. Each town has a mayor and/or military commander in charge, who all report directly to the monarch and are appointed by him from among the local citizens (usually local aristocracy). There are councils and advisors at the various levels, many of whom got their positions through nepotism and keep them by maintaining the most basic level of competence as to not upset the citizens.
Culture
The Dominion was formed in the second century 2A, when the coastal, swampy Dumein Keep began to expand and conquer nearby towns. Previously a fairly quiet fishing town, no one is quite sure what made the thegn at the time decide to turn to militarism and imperialism. Through the centuries, the Dominion has kept the maritime theme of their standard, despite their having no navy and only one coastal city. The militaristic culture has lasted to the present, though it differs between the capital and the other towns. It is tough to describe the culture of the nation as a whole, since the capital (which has more citizens than the rest of the area combined) has such a different culture to the rest of the area.
Demography and Population
The Dumein Dominion is majority human, though the exact proportions differ from town to town. The capital has a large contingent of lizardfolk who have lived alongside the humans in the swampy area for centuries. In the more inland areas, halflings or gnomes tend to be the second race. The nation as a whole is fairly cosmopolitan and does not have any negative attitudes toward any specific race or group of people. Most of the inland towns are fairly steady in their populations, not growing or shrinking much over time, while the capital is still growing slowly but steadily.
Military
The Dominion maintains a standing army made of all males in the capital ages 16-30 and about a quarter of the same male population in the outlying towns. This equates to around 20,000 soldiers that train and drill constantly, always seeking to better their martial skills and knowledge. The forts and training areas have been slightly bolstered by conscripts from the recently conquered territories, but this equates to less than 5,000 additional soldiers.
Foreign Relations
Despite what any official representative of the Dominion might say, the relationships with the neighboring nations have been fraught for some time, especially now. While most people on the continent are still hopeful for the future of the Everyn Federation, many still harbor resentment if not outright hatred for the Dominion and their long-held militaristic attitude. The Dominion itself does not specifically dislike any of their neighbors; instead, they see them as inferior or meant to be subservient to the greater culture that is the Dominion. Now that the Dominion has conquered all of their neighbors, they are more than happy to work with all of them to create a unified culture, and the king has seemed disappointed that any other neighbors would harbor ill intentions or ill feelings toward the Dominion.
