The Ancient Dragons allowed their hubris to blind as they created Augmented, powerful dragons who are modified through magic. This made them powerful, able to control the realm's elements with ease. However, amongst them rose a threat that no one could ever deal with in the Ancient Age: The Fell Dragon. It caused absolute devastation as it showed the ability to control the Augmented dragons, making them cause death and destruction across Avestra. This shattered the Dragon Empire and drove the dragons into Hiding.

At the same time, the ancient Giants delved into runic magic more and more, hoping to unlock its secrets. There are theories they wished to use this magic to dominate the elements, perhaps even bring the Dragons under their control and end their long war. Or do the same to the enslaved species. Unfortunately, their experiments led to the birth of living runes and magic which turned their runes, their very infrastructure against them.

The Lonavi were the only ones to survive somewhat intact. Their empire saw the writing on the wall and retreated from from the devastation, taking any refugees with them that wanted to come. Many died in the escape but many more could've joined the dead if the Vampires never left.
