Basic Information
Anatomy
Oni are among the tallest of the mortal species, often standing between 6’5” and 7’6”. Their bodies are heavily muscled, with dense bone structure and great endurance. Oni skin tones range across vibrant hues of red, blue, or yellow, setting them apart from most other species. From their foreheads grow distinctive horns ranging from one to three per individual which may be straight, curved, or spiral in shape. Hair is typically coarse and dark, though brighter colors sometimes manifest in magically gifted lineages.
Biological Traits
Oni are naturally attuned to fire and lightning magic. Some can instinctively wield small bursts of flame or electricity without formal training or incantations, making them dangerous even without study.
- Innate Affinity: Fire and lightning manipulation often appears in childhood, manifesting during moments of emotion or combat.
- Structured Magic: With discipline, Oni learn to refine their raw elemental control into destructive spells or martial techniques.
- Horn Conduction: Oni horns act as natural magical foci, allowing them to channel or release elemental energy more efficiently. In rare cases, they can even detect electromagnetic waves through their horns, giving them unique perception of their environment

- Youth (6–20 years): They begin to develop their combat instincts and elemental gifts. Games among oni children often involve contests of strength, sparring, or endurance.
- Adolescence (21–50 years): Their physical power and horns mature, often coinciding with the first true manifestation of fire or lightning magic. Many begin structured training in combat or artistry.
- Adulthood (51–250 years): Oni reach their prime, excelling in physical combat, elemental mastery, and crafts. They see battle as a path to self-understanding.
- Elderhood (251–300 years): Though slower in movement, elder oni remain formidable. They are valued for their wisdom, artistry, and mastery of martial philosophy.
Ecology and Habitats
Oni thrive in mountain ranges and colder climates, their naturally higher body temperature protecting them from harsh conditions. Villages are often built into cliffsides or carved into stone, combining fortifications with communal halls for feasting, training, and artistry.
Behaviour
Oni are known for their fiery tempers and aggressive nature, but this aggression is balanced by a deep sense of artistry and philosophy.
- Aggression: They respect strength and passion, often expressing themselves through combat or performance.
- Artistry: Many oni are accomplished smiths, carvers, or musicians, channeling their emotions into creative works.
