Oirilid
Oirilids are a general term describing the insectoid creatures commonly found in The Shreds . They are distinguished by their thick carapace, as well as their many legs. Varying in size from about the size of a grain of sand, to the size of a large ship, Oirilids are both pest, beast, and domesticated creatures. Some wild forms of Oirilids, such as Diazul , are seen as dangerous to humans, due to their behaviour of hunting humans when they are able. Most Oirilids are passive, however.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Oirilids have a large range in appearance, but the one commonly associated characteristic of the group is their multitude of appendages, often specialized for countless different uses. Some Oirilids have 6 appendages, perhaps 4 legs and two arms, whereas others have hundreds. Most have about 10-20 appendages, with different uses ranging from legs, wings and arms to weapons, balancing weights for flight, and more.
Genetics and Reproduction
Oirilids have a wide range of reproduction habits, however all lay eggs, which hatch into larvae, which grow as juveniles into adults.
Growth Rate & Stages
Some oirilids have a fifth stage, after adulthood, called acting death. During this stage, the oirilid is for all intents and purposes dead, however somehow, the carcass continues to behave how the living oirilid does. Some theorize that the spirit of the oirilid is not letting go of the body, which is how the dead creature continues to "live", however many scholars believe this stage to be a local legend.
Ecology and Habitats
Oirilids are found across the sunside of Aureole, however they are mostly concentrated on The Shreds .
Dietary Needs and Habits
Some oirilids consume plant material, some meat, and most a combination of both. Being insectoid in nature, many are opportunistic scavengers who eat whatever they can get their claws on.
Additional Information
Domestication
Some oirilid species have been successfully domesticated into cattle-like creatures, for the purpose of food as well as companionship. Some oirilids are intelligent enough to be trained, and act as pets in upper class Sunside society.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Generally, oirilids do not have particularly honed senses. Some carnivorous oirilids, such as Diazul , have exceptional eyesight, and many small scavenger species have excellent senses of smell, however most oirilids seem fairly average.
