Myre

A myre is a very small species of Oirilid , about the size of a single grain of sand. It is often found in homes in cities across Sunside Aureole , and is seen as a pest, even though it is an important pollinator of desert flora. They are usually a dark yellowish brown colour.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Myre, like all Oirilids, have a multitude of appendages, each specialized to its own unique use to the creature. Although they are hard to count, each myre owns four legs, and two arm-like claw appendages, useful for collecting food from the desert. They also have a set of wings, as well as two feather-like heat-loss appendages.

Genetics and Reproduction

Myre oirilids create large colonies at the location of carrion, burrowing into the desert to reach cooler temperatures suitable for breeding and raising young. Female myre lay about 50-100 eggs in the underground colony, before dying. Males live for several times longer, being able to reproduce multiple times, unlike the females.

Growth Rate & Stages

Myre eggs hatch into larvae, which are guided to the surface by males, to reach the decomposing body which the colony was built around. The larvae consume the carcass, and grow into juveniles, sprouting the many appendages, culminating with wings. Juveniles then fly off in swarms, and grow into adults in a few gap cylces.

Ecology and Habitats

Myre colonies only spring up around decaying matter in the desert, often the bodies of larger, dead oirilids, or even humans. Their optimal environment is therefore the harshest one which can be found, as the small creatures thrive among death.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Myre colonies crop up every time a carcass is left out for too long, and often even if meat isn't completely fresh anymore. Myre will always find food which isn't concealed completely. Most poorer people don't mind their presence, however, as they give a salty taste, and remind them to eat the food before it spoils completely.

Biological Cycle

During the gap, the myre seem to be more agitated, and fly more erratically, leading some scholars to guess that the small insectoids use the radiant, prismatic light of the shatter to navigate by.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Myre move in swarms of several dozen to thousands.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Used as a herald of food about to spoil, seen as an omen of death, and passing on.

Facial characteristics

This oirilid has a triangular mouth, with tiny cillia which can guide food into its maw.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Myre seem to be able to locate rotting material from thousands of meters away, almost certainly by smell.
