Dragon
Dragons are one of the two sentient species on Aureole. 5998 years ago, they were created to be immortal beings by Inert and, and granted shapeshifting by Innovation . They were among the first Conduits of godly power. They were created alongside the The Originals .
Basic Information
Anatomy
Dragons are typically scaled insectoid (Oirilid - like) creatures. They have a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours and traits.
Biological Traits
Dragons are functionally immortal. They have a wide variation of shapes and sizes, and they are adept shapeshifters.
Genetics and Reproduction
Dragons are only able to reproduce after periods following the Fibbonacci sequence of years. That is to say, at first they can reproduce after 1 year, then 1 year, then 2, then 3... and so on. This means that the population's growth is dramatically slower today than it was when they were first created.
Growth Rate & Stages
Unlike The Originals , who are unable to reproduce, dragons do so. Dragons are all the same gender, and are capable of laying eggs. They do not need to breed, per se, as they are fully capable of asexual reproduction. They have a way of scrambling their genetic material, so their children are not clones. They can, however, sexually reproduce, if they wish.
Behaviour
Dragons are obsessed with knowledge and truths about the world, often ending up as scholars, scientists, but often also being reclusive. They are secretive, and many prefer to keep their knowledge to themselves. They seek truth for the sake of understanding and respecting how things are, not to change anything. They also often have hoards of objects that are of particular interest to that individual. One might collect rare fossils, another unique plant seeds, another furniture, or another even simply cups. They obsess over their chosen hoard, and will animatedly discuss the topic if you prompt them. Not that they need much prompting.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Dragons are often recluses, living alone most of the time, except rarely when they breed sexually. They do not have a concept of family in the same way that humans do. They acknowledge who their parents, children, and siblings are, it just isn't important to their society.
Average Intelligence
Dragons are not more intelligent than other sentient species, but they are however often quick learners, not to mention wise due to their immortal lifespans granting them time to study.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Dragons are able to sense spoken truths and lies.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Dragons do not have familial names, as family is not an important dragon concept. Their first names often have two parts, the first being a sleek, almost slow and gentle sound, and the second being a shorter, harsher sound. There are, of course, exceptions. Examples include: Si'i-Kar, Sennu-Dur, Hennou-Xaz, Oai-Tak, Sier-Kel, Yole-Gi, Opher-Kri etc.
Beauty Ideals
Dragons do not care for physical form, as, being shapeshifters, they can be perceived as they please.
Gender Ideals
Gender is non-existent to dragons.
Courtship Ideals
Attractiveness, to dragons, is defined by how many facts a dragon can name about their chosen knowledge hoard. The more facts and pieces of information about their chosen topic, the more attractive they are.
Relationship Ideals
Dragons typically have few friends, and fewer partners. They often bond with one individual if they choose to sexually reproduce, and do so for life with that partner.
Average Technological Level
Dragons are behind many of the technological advancements of the current age, however they rarely share it. They only do so when they are forced to during a challenge to their knowledge. Dragons take their knowledge of their chosen topic very seriously, and if anyone challenges their knowledge, they often try to prove that they are more knowledgeable. Humans have discovered this, and therefore often send challengers in order to tease out tidbits of knowledge about important topics that the dragon in question has not revealed, but is forced to in order to prove its superior knowledge.
Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals
Dragons engage in bouts of knowledge. A challenger will seek a dragon who is thought to have knowledge on a topic which is desired by the challenger. The challenger then states a fact about the dragon's chosen knowledge hoard. The dragon then either confirms or denys the fact. If the fact is true, it is the dragon's turn to reveal a fact. If the challenger speaks more truths about the topic than the dragon, the dragon becomes indebted to the challenger, and will vow to study their topic until they can answer a question the challenger has. If the dragon is able to speak more truths, then the challenger is defeated. Some dragons are kind with their challenges, and still reveal information that the challenger seeks, such as in the story: The Dragon's Mercy: A Tale of Hope and Healing .
Common Taboos
It is taboo for dragons to have multiple partners, as it is seen as a distraction from their true purpose of discovery.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Dragons are recluses. They are not dangerous, however fearsome they may choose to appear. Humans will sometimes try to tease information out of them by challenging them to knowledge duels on their chosen topic. Dragons who study important fields, for example metallurgy techniques or agriculture, are more often challenged. Not many seek information from the dragon who hoards cups and information on cups and cup design.
