Changelings
Basic Information
Anatomy
Humanoid. Their arms and legs are slightly disproportionately long compared to their body size in their natural form.
Biological Traits
All changelings have the inherent ability to shape-shift. They may, at will, undergo a transformation as though polymorphed, except limited to a humanoid. While this ability is mechanically almost identical to the spell, it appears to be a fully biological supernatural ability, as it functions in areas where magic does not.
Genetics and Reproduction
Sexual reproduction with a gestation of approximately 12 months. Changeling children must develop control over their shape-shifting abilities.
Growth Rate & Stages
Changeling childhood lasts about 10 years on average and then they spend 10 years in adolescence; most changelings are considered fully adult and responsible for themselves by age 22.
Ecology and Habitats
Found anywhere that humans thrive, although they prefer large cities or at least prosperous towns with high traffic and lots of trade.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Changelings are omnivores with a marked preference for sweet and or rich foods. It is theorized that their shape-shifting powers are calorie intensive, though they appear to require no significant effort. For this reason, it is suspected that it would have been impossible for them to arise as an independent race in a less civilized and economically prosperous time period.
Biological Cycle
Although the average lifespan of a changeling is currently around 225 years old, records indicate that just 1000 years ago that lifespan was about 175, and 3000 years ago it was 100. It is believed that the changeling bloodlines are still in a state of stabilizing due to the youngness of the race as a whole. However indications of the races shifting stats appear to be slowing and many of the learned theorize that the modern changeling is very close to their final standards.
Additional Information
Facial characteristics
A changelings non-human heritage is abundantly obvious in the appearance of their natural facial structures. While they are much more distinct that those of a doppelganger, they are most definitely less refined than a humans. Their eyes are large, white, and oval with no visible pupil or iris; many changeling wear a dark eyeshadow in order to help outline their eyes and make their faces less off-putting to other races. Their noses are more like small bumps and they have thin, unpigmented lips. Their ears are vaguely pointed, but much less distinct than an elf's. Their hair is usually straight, thin, and white or silver.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Mostly changeling dominant communities within a larger ethnic group, but several changeling communities have been found in more rural areas as independent towns recently. Changelings enjoy comfortable living so even in smaller communities they tend to draw together in order to attract trade and better economic variety.
Average Intelligence
Comparable to that of a human.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
A changeling's senses are on par with an average humans.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Most changeling names are unisex and short, only one or two syllables. Outside of this their naming conventions usually conform to those of the community they are living within.
Beauty Ideals
Changelings tend to cultivate two different ideals of beauty; that of their natural form, and that of any prefered alter egos or common forms they take. They take great pains and pride to ensure that their alternate forms conform to beauty ideals of the race or culture they are imitating, viewing anything less as disrespect to that culture or race.
Gender Ideals
Both male and female changelings are very androgynous with only the primary and secondary sex traits (such as genitals, breasts, hips, and shoulders) differentiating them and even those not as significantly as other races. A changeling can swap genders as part of their shape-shifting ability and enjoy intercourse and even become pregnant while in a female form, a pregnant changeling looses the ability to shape-shift after about the 3rd month until after they give birth.
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Common, and any that are common among the region their community is in.
History
Approximately 6000 years ago the first community of changelings was discoveredby agents of The Watchers Over the Vault in a burrough of a large city, while small, there were about 75 members including children and elderly who were very cagey about where they'd come from. Eventually, after some measure of trust had been earned, it was revealed that the changelings, as they referred to themselves, had come from the ranks of doppelgangers assassins when it was determined they weren't suited to that skill set. Originally about 30 individuals an additional 20 had joined them a few years later and at that point it was decided not to take in anymore adults to keep from growing too large too quickly. Since then their new members had all come from the birth of children.
After that, attentive observation uncovered 3 additional communities of similar size and age within the same city over the next few decades. From that point forward small communities of 50-80 individuals began to pop-up every twenty years or so embedded within large and industrious cities, this trend continued for around 200 years at which point the Watchers observed that new communities and changelings identified where populated entirely by changelings born in known communities who had relocated to keep from becoming too obvious where they were before. Since that times changelings have done well, while not exactly thriving and have become one of the major civilized races, if not among the most respected.
