Alternic

Alternic is the oldest living human language, native tongue to the Alternian Peninsula and its inhabitants.

Description

Alternic is marked by sharp consonants and rounded vowels. Syllables are clearly enunciated, often ending in hard stops or flowing dipthongs.

Speakers

Alternic is the language of the Alternian Peninsula, and is widely spoken by its populace, as well as many in the neighboring state of Cormath who regularly conduct business or travel to Alternia.

Dialects

Each of the eight city-states of Alternia has its own dialect of Alternic, though differences between them are largely superficial, acting more to identify the locality of a speaker than significantly hinder comprehension.
  • Alterni: Alterni has an archaic tone, bearing a close, if superficial, resemblance to Classic Alternic.
  • Vedini: Vedini is subtle and cunning, with extensive use of dual meaning words and rhetorical traps.
  • Pollan: Influenced by extensive participation in maritime trade, Pollan makes extensive use of loanwords from other languages and has taken on the vulgar brusqueness common amongst sailors in Astora.
  • Vathiki: Vathiki is a quiet and unassuming dialect, with a tone of warmth and deference.
  • Tyrak: Formal and ceremonial in tone, Tyrak takes on a religious and ritualistic undertone.
  • Crotan: Smooth and measured, Crotan is a favorite of scholars and poets for its clarity and expressive precision.
  • Gerai: Blunt and clipped, Gerai matches the militant nature of the city's culture.
  • Geronti: Geronti has a color and vibrancy that stands in stark contrast to the rest of Alternic, giving those who speak it an air of charm and character relative to other Alternic dialects.

Writing System

Alternic writing makes use of the Mycana script.

History

Modern Alternic arose from the continued evolution of Classical Alternic. It is a far more fractured language than classic Alternic, owing to the more independent nature of the Alternium City States in more recent history. While the changes were slow, Alternic had fully diverged from Classical Alternic by the beginning of the Modern Era, with most scholars agreeing that each city state had developed its own distinct dialect by this point.
