Tosakaga Shogunate
Responsible for the rise of the Samurai class as a whole, and for the longest lasting peace in Rokugan history, the Tosakaga Shogunate is now a relic of the past. All remaining members of it's family dead, and it's rule over Rokugan long gone. The Tosakaga were once the most powerful military force in all of Rokugan, once responsible for even recreating the Shogunate as a whole and removing the emperor from absolute power. Every great clan in Rokugan is related to the Tosakaga Shogunate in some way, save for the Sugikawa clan. To be named Shogun, you must trace your roots back to the Saishoku Shogunate, who were the leading military family under the imperial family, which they could all do. Unfortunately with the death of Mitsuhide Tosakaga, the Tosakaga Shogunate has ended and lead to the beginning of another great civil war in Rokugan. This time, however, it is bigger and bloodier than ever.
History
The Tosakaga clan rose to power in the last civil war. They rebelled against the Saishoku Shogunate's laws that attempted to remove Samurai from any power. These laws were made to strip all Samurai of their titles and make them no more than simple middle class soldiers, rather than elite noble warriors. With imperial backing, this seemed all too much for the powerful Samurai clans who were only just beginnig to rise to prominence. This resulted in a bloody war that lasted five years, ending with the emperor being stripped of almost all political power in governing every decision besides who his Shogun would be. Rather than risking another civil war, the emperor at the time named the Tosakaga Clan the new Shoguns.
For many generations, the Tosakaga clan would maintain control over all of Rokugan. Rokugan would develop much under their rule, and the Samurai class would become so powerful that they replaced the distant imperial family as governing rulers of Rokugan. These Samurai would later come to be the many minor and great clans of Rokugan.
About two-hundred years ago, Oni began laying waste to many Rokugan settlements all across Rokugan. Before long, the Oni's move grew bolder and bolder, until they moved into the farmland and major cities across all of Rokugan. This series of events would later become known as the Oni wars, as they in and of themselves, a multitude of small wars happening in or around the same time all across the islands. By the end of it, the greatest Oni clan was pushed deep into the mountains of Ryuzen. With their defeat, the Sugikawa clan would be named the owners of Kyushu by the Tosakaga Shogunate much to the dismay of the other great clans of Rokugan. These wars would mark the decline of the Tosakaga Shogunate, as from this point on they'd only slowly grow less and less powerful.
With the Odawari province in a war amongst themselves again, the Mitsuhide Tosakaga could find no way to bring about peace in Rokugan. Many say that these events were what truly marked the beginning of the current civil war, as this is where the Tosakaga Shogunate's weaknesses were truly shown. Not able to put an end to these wars, the Tosakaga clan appeared extremely weak to the rest of the clans. The clans started openly ignoring Mitsuhide's laws and invitations to court, and war seemed eminent. With Mitsuhide's strange death in 1212, the Tosakaga Shogunate would end, and Rokugan would fall back into a time of war.
