the Mathidoni
The Mathidoni are an ethnogroup of High Elves native to Astaeria.
Once the rulers of ancient Mathidon, the mathidoni are now a diaspora and have been so since the dawn of the common aeon known as Ae Expugnatum A.E..
Today, those with mathidonic ancestry are split between nations in the region, living a variety of different lifestyles and enjoying varying degrees of freedom.
The First Great Elvaran War resulted in the fall of the Mathidoni Empire at the hands of a diverse alliance seeking an end to oppression and elven superiority. The High Elves which had ruled central Elvara for the majority of recorded history fled from the onslaught with survivors scattering across Astaeria.
A fractured history
The First Great Elvaran War resulted in the fall of the Mathidoni Empire at the hands of a diverse alliance seeking an end to oppression and elven superiority. The High Elves which had ruled central Elvara for the majority of recorded history fled from the onslaught with survivors scattering across Astaeria.
The formation of Errolone
Due to fierce rivalry with the nomadic tribes of the forest who had been oppressed under mathidonic rule, many mathidoni were forced south, where according to legend they were able to use ancient techniques of etheral manipulation to cross the sea. It is thought they did this with the aim of finding sanctuary in the Elvish homeland of legend—Aurevion. Unable to find their fabled native land however, a large proportion of the mathidoni refugees instead settled on the large forested island south-east of Elvara. After several, years a competent leader emerged,. Lorien Caladrius-Eldrin, who had been a general and a seer during the First Great Elvaran War, united the fractured diaspora on the island, and founded the Kingdom of Errolone based on the The Edict of Caladrius, a constitutional document guaranteeing magical superiority with a strict societal hierarchy. The Erranorian separatist movement
During the reign of Eryndra Aelthorne-Calavren, a separatist movement emerged, in opposition to the Queen's oppressive rule and subjugation of those possessed little or no etheral ability. This led to a small exodus of peoples from Errolone, and the foundation of Erannor across the sea of glass. The free republic is to this day considered the only democratically elected state in Astaeria which offers an alternative to tyranny and a home for all, including Elves with mathidonic ancestry. The Erroloni Civil War
In 1365 A.E., civil war broke out in the Kingdom of Errolone, a war which is still ongoing in the present day. Due to the strict social hierarchy preventing anyone without any degree of etheral powers from earning positions of power, a faction emerged of those subjugated by the Erroloni regime and seeking reform to the political system. With the failure of negotiation, Tharion Amdor-Vindaris leads an army of mostly non-magical Erroloni peoples against Queen Elmyra Dalyna-Glynethi in a war which has raged for nearly 40 years. The war has created many refugees and has resulted in the exodus of hundreds of mathidoni back to Elvara, where they live mostly in poverty and in conflict with other societal groups.Mathidonic Naming Principles
All High Elves have a double-barrelled name, one name taken from their mother and one from their father. It is often the easiest way to tell the difference between elvaran wood elves and mathidonic/erroloni elves. The mother's name comes first in the sequence and the father's name comes second. Elven women pass on their father's name to their children whilst elven men pass on their mother's name. e.g. if an elven man with the surname Gyndlor-Pracarris, and an elven women with the surname Refleora-Vilendral had a child together, the father would pass on the part of his name symbolising his own mother (Gyndlor) and the mother would pass on the name of her father (Vilendral). Thus the child would get the surname Gyndlor-Vilendral. Unlike humans, High Elves keep their surnames for life and do not change names after bonding with another.
I hope the civil war will come to a resolution soon. :( I really love their naming traditions.
