Reinhaldt, The Dead Stone City
"...the architecture has never been achieved since though not for lack of trying. A complex web of magical forces and natural ones allowed for some very interesting designs, none of which survived the Sundering. It's a shame really, such knowledge lost to time because of the folly of a few ambitious men and women."
- excerpt from "Courts to Coliseums" by Kalyn Abernathy
Demographics
Tales tell of small elemental beings that exists around the tears chasing away would be plunderers or outright killing them for trophies and few dare travel to the old ruin for fear of these creatures.
Defences
Six giant stone sentries once stood along its walls and in time of need they could be animated to defend the city. They were never deployed though due to fear of even engaging in war near the city limits.
Infrastructure
The city was formed from the stone of Mount Arokidas, the mountain that once stood where the ruin is now. The mages formed the stone to be magical in nature and would bend to the will of the citizens within its borders. Mages could open portals to various streets, or conjure tunnels leading to various locations across the city.
The marvel of Reinhaldt was rivaled by none and still stands as a testament to the willpower of the ancient Mages who sculpted the city from the very stones of the mountain that once stood in its place. Streets were designed with arcane magic in mind and various alleys would lead to deadends, expecting that the traveller could conjure portals to navigate. Massive spires seemed to emerge from the ground, stretching several hundred feet into the sky, man made stalagmites set amongst animated guardians who stood stoicly.
Defense of the city was assured due to the location, nestled amongst the mountain range in the northern Gravian Spine, armies couldnt assault in force because the roads leading in and out were narrow and rocky. Ambush points were created throughout a series of tunnels and Reinhaldt was known for having the finest arcane assasins, often appearing from thin air to finish a job and be gone again in the blink of an eye. In the event of a true emergency the council would convene and summon forth a massive shield that would buy the city time to mount a proper defense.
The city itself wasn't built overnight by anyone person or group, it's location was chosen carefully due to the ley-line activity that flowed beneath the mountains in this part of Ascondia. The arcane flow was discovered accidentally by the former residents of Atraxcus, the sunken continent to the west and by sheer coincedence met a disasterous fate as the land surrounding an open ley-line was improperly channeled and ignorantly exploited. The resulting surges of energy broke the land apart and most of it sand beneath the already unforgiving seas that surrounded it.
When the founding of the city was decided a pact was made with the Dwarves that also inhabit the mountain range. They were to help with the deconstruction of the mountain and the mages would take care of the rest. To this day it's believed that beneath the great city lies a secret unearthed by the Dwarves.
Life was lavish in Reinhaldt and those who dwelled here were wanting for very little in life. Trade eventually made it wasy to the city and small pop-up towns began to appear along the way. One of these would be the beginnings of the town Stonehaven, it's inhabitants farming the lands to sell at the extravegant markets in the city. As word spread of a magical arcane city in the mountains, most travellers were there just to see it for their own eyes.
Floating crystals, animated objects and a constant low thrum of arcane power made one feel as if they were in a dream made real. To the mundane it was a surreal experience and was a constant temptation, for the inhabitants of Reinhaldt often looked as if they feared very little and desired very much.
