North-Western Arm

Geography

The land is predominantly covered in large hills, with cavernous mountains to the North-West, and coniferous forests and shrub land to the South-East. Farther down there is also grassland and two major forests. The weather is usually cool and still, farther south it rains often. The North-Western Arm is largely engulfed by the sea. They have access to fresh water in the summer with the tundraic lakes forming when it rains.

Ecosystem

The north-western part of the arm is a tundra and borders a mountain range. During the summer, the permafrost thaws just enough to let plants grow and reproduce, but because the ground below this is frozen, the water cannot sink any lower, and so the water forms the lakes and marshes found during the summer months. It tends to be windy there, with the wind coming in from the northern sea, often blowing upwards of 50–100 km/h. However, it is desert-like, with only about 150–250 mm of precipitation falling per year, most of it in the summer. The soil is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus.   Beyond the mountain range the snow doesn't melt anymore and the climate there would be classified as polar.   Farther south the tundra gets switched out for taiga with coniferous forests, Precipitation is still rather low and mainly in the form of rain during the summer months, but also as snow or fog. The colder climate hinders development of soil, and the ease with which plants can use its nutrients. The diversity of soil organisms in the boreal forest is high, comparable to the tropical rainforest. Fallen leaves and moss can remain on the forest floor for a long time in the cool, moist climate, which limits their organic contribution to the soil. Acids from evergreen needles further leach the soil, creating spodosol, and the acidic forest floor often has only lichens and some mosses growing on it. In clearings in the forest and in areas with more boreal deciduous trees, there are more herbs and berries growing, and soils are consequently deeper.   In the south-eastern most region of the arm, technically on the inland already, there are grasslands with shrubs and it borders the Feyr Wàmàr, where it then transitions into the western plains.

Localized Phenomena

There are forest fires in the taiga parts of the arm.

Fauna & Flora

Low growing plants such as moss, heath (such as crowberry and black bearberry) and lichen, pines, spruces, and larches. Some broadleaf trees also occur, notably birch, aspen, willow, and rowan. Many smaller herbaceous plants, such as ferns and occasionally ramps grow closer to the ground.   There are reindeer and moose/elks, bears, wolves and a great variety of frogs and salamanders. There are also quite a few birds (eg. thrushes, sparrows, eagles and buzzards), hares, lynx, weasels, martens, badgers, red foxes, coyotes

Natural Resources

Lumber, natural gas, coal, water, certain herbs

History

Kaat was founded on the North Western Arm in 522 ABT, after meadow elves from the eastern hills of the Greiforn mountains had travelled to Kaat by ship and overcome the Sunkissed Peaks with the help of Amias. They founded Kaat in honour of Amias and other spirits that revealed themselves soon after. Kaat's only notable conflicts were durin the Magic Wars in the Age of Fury, where they fought off the influences of one of the reawakened drowned gods and defended their territory against the residents of former Enat.

Tourism

There is quite some religious tourism, especially during the Blessing of Amias the Golden and other Festivals in honour of the spirits, but outside of that Kaat isn't exactly a popular tourist destination with maybe the exception of Meladaa.
