Land of the Lost: Session 15 Report

General Summary

Just prior to turning in for the night, the party was again visited by the young girl that had snuck into their bunkhouse preciously. She was excited for their return and asked if they had made the map that should could use to lead her and the other separatists to Sanctum and, hopefully, out of the Lost Mountains. The party informed her that they had made a map, but it was no longer accurate and that the Lost Labyrinth was more dangerous than ever now. They advised her to accept her life in the valley as leaving would likely result in the death of her and her friends.

She did not take this well and stormed off angrily. Worried that she may try and retaliate, the party informed the guards about her in hopes that she would be kept out of trouble and not have an opportunity to get them in trouble either. The guards appreciate their report, seeming to know who the girl was and what her intentions were.

The following day, the 56th day of First Summer, was spent resting and relaxing. Serqet working with Ton to repair the broken wand and Jack went to speak with the village elders about their future plans. The village honored their end of the bargain, granting the party a map of the caverns, but did not think they owed them any more equipment or support as several of the people had perished within the Labyrinth while traveling with the party and they had brought a group of outsiders to their village, creating tension and uncertainty that would likely be long-lived. However, if the party wished to be of further service, a deal could be arranged. Namely, they requested that the party venture into the caverns and return with at least one of the maps from a pair of Seekers that were supposed to return several days ago. They hoped that the two were still alive, but if not, recovering the maps would make their sacrifice worthwhile.

The following day, the party set out into the caverns in search of the seekers. Not far inside, they encountered an elderly Dryn woman named Myrah. She claimed to be a retired Seeker and wanted to personally accompany the party in search of the two that had failed to return. The party agreed and they ventured further into the cold darkness.

It didn't take the party long to reach the end of the mapped portion of the caverns. Carefully exploring each branching passageway, they eventually found evidence of a camp, though it was several days old. Additionally, they identified a mushroom that grew from certain walls that possessed calming and numbing properties, a fact many of the party members experienced personally. They also found a portion of the ceiling that glowed with a blue energy. Once the rock was cleared away, they found cables and pipes that were of similar make to the Gate, suggesting that they were somewhere beneath it. They marked this location as one of interest for future expeditions.

An unsettling discovery was made while exploring passages that they believed to run in parallel. Small holes large enough for a small Anthrope or Dryn to crawl through were hidden behind rocks that could be rolled away, suggesting that a small but intelligent group of creatures used these tunnels to hunt and ambush. They proceeded foreword cautiously.

Towards the end of the adventuring day, the party spotted a faint blue glow emanating from a side passage. Investigating, they found a space with clear bluish water covering the majority of the floor. Several of the part members stepped forward to investigate, but quickly found their feet stuck in deceptively sticky mud beneath the water's surface. Just as they did, a dozen small beings emerged from crevices and holes in the cavern wall and ambushed the party. They had critically underestimated the party and were quickly dealt with, but the party took note of their cleverness and decided to proceed with more caution. The beings seemed to be miniature Dryn, though it seemed as if they had lived underground for nearly as long as the Lex-Gate Valley Dryn had lived above ground.

Knowing that they were not alone, the party backtracked to a dead-end tunnel that they could set up a defense and set up camp for the night. The night passed uneventfully except for a handful of instances where it seemed as if they were being watched from just beyond the firelight.

The following day, the party continued their search, uncovered more signs of activity and also the den of a large unidentified creature. Eventually, they encountered a wooden barricade that they were easily able to smash through, granting them access to a very recently abandoned camp. Most of the goods had been destroyed, but the party was able to salvage some cloth for bandages, food, and wood for torches. They also found a trail of blood leading down on of the passages. Following it, they came to a fork in the path with a blood trail going down both tunnels. Following the left one and then the right, they found the bodies of the two Seekers, though neither had any of their signature equipment or, more importantly, their maps.

Hurrying down the only remaining passages, the party caught up to a group of a dozen of miniature Dryn and a large scaled and winged monster. This fight proved much more challenging as some of them were heavily armored, possessed alchemical weapons, and, in the case of the creature, fired blasts of magical energy from its maw at them. In the end, the party was able to subdue them, but not without sustaining many injuries. August passed out from his wounds but was stabilized by Ahgythah and Serqet sustained so many wounds that she will need to be closely monitored for the next several days to ensure she doesn't succumb to her wounds.

As the party was searching the bodies for the maps as well as any other useful gear, such as the wayfinders, they heard the sound of crashing waves through the partially collapsed tunnel ahead. Investigating, they saw a vast, black space with faint dots of light in the distance. They were unable to see it, but from the sounds of it, they had come across a vast underground sea and, if the lights that were visible represented the lanterns of civilization, it has home to people that may be able to further aid them on their quest.

But first, the party had to decide whether or not to return to the Lex-Gate Valley to report on the fallen Seekers and return the maps in hope for additional equipment and support, or press on with the equipment they already had. Myrah seemed satisfied with them keeping the equipment they had found and said she would take back the maps and let them know of the party's service to their community and that she had let them keep the wayfinders as payment for their heroism.
