Clanlord U (a.k.a. the Chaotic, the Foolish, the Great God)
The Dragons were not the problem. Those who called them gods were the problem.
The ancient dragon clanlord named U -- and known as U the Chaotic, U the Foolish, or the Great God U -- is credited with giving the knoweldge of magic to the peoples of Argentii. It was with this magic that they turned on the dragons and, ultimately, that led to the dragons rending Argentii into five realms, long before the flooding left the diaspora that exists today.

Belief should not be mistaken for truth. Unfortunately, it often is. Woe be upon the blind fool and the other blind fools who follow him.
It is whispered among the Cused of the Shadow of the Wing that the Record of Creation is the last record of U's instruciton to the peoples of Argentii on how to harness the power of the leylines.
They believe that through the mystic rituals of the Record, the Ploui and his most precious chosen can harness U's spirit of universal chaos. Thus ascended, they will become the new clanlords and return order to all of Argentii.

U was charged with safe-guarding the knowledge and power of natural magic.
In the The First Age, the land and the people were one. Leylines -- veins of powerful, conductive crystal -- lay deep within the ground, conducting the mysterious energies that allowed the dragons to protect their nests and successfully hatch their eggs. U was the guardian of these energies, ensuring that they flowed smoothly for all of Argentii.
Accomplishments & Achievements
U gave the knowledge and power of natural magic to the peoples of Argentii. No one knows why; perhaps it was U's contribution to one of the many great dragon wars.
As time passed, the clanlords grew complacent and cruel. Some think that U felt sorrow for the people living under the tyranny of the other clanlords. Others believe that U embodied the universal spirit of chaos. It was the worship of the Great God U that led to the dangerous deification of all dragons.
Failures & Embarrassments
U gave the knowledge and power of natural magic to the poeples of Argentii, and in the end they used it against U and the other clanlords.
The math supported the people over time, and eventually they became too numerous, too skilled, and too powerful to be controlled by the clanlords. The same magic that sustained the dragons and their nests was being used to hunt the eggs and destroy them before they could hatch.
Mental Trauma
The other clanlords found out that U gave the knowledge and power of natural magic to the peoples of Argentii. In no way were they pleased.
The clanlords had grown content to use their growing herds of people as toys in games of war. But they could not slay the people fast enough to keep them from replenishing for they had become dependent on the people for many things. As the dragons raged, the people began to find their nests and destroy their eggs.
The dragons were in danger of extinction.
In their desperation, the dragons used their combined powers to rip the leylines from the ground, rending the united lands into five distinct regions with deep and dangerous sea passages acting as dangerous barriers. The land was divided, as were the people, and thus began The Lost Age
U was banished and thus faded into memory, then myth, then legend.
