Honey Nut Bacon

Among my favorite recipes to come from Nanguu Hearthstone's kitchen is their honey nut bacon. I don't know their secret -- Nan rarely shares a recipe -- but I know how easy it is to make myself sick from eating more than is good for me!

One of the most popular foods to ever cross the waters away from Crossroads Island, Honey Nut Bacon is a staple at breakfast tables across every island. It combines the sweet flavor of honey and toasted nuts with the salted bacon in a perfect blend of yum across the tongue.

Extra sticky

Extra crispy

History

This special treat has been served at Library Inn for thousands of years, and is one of the kitchen's signature dishes. It has become a symbol of Crossroads Island, bringing together elements from all over Argentii. Wildflower honey, pecans, bacon, and black pepper.

At least, those are the ingredients as everyone else makes it. The recipe got out, at some point, but not the whole thing, for there are certain secret spices that Nan adds to make Library Inn's honey nut bacon unlike any other across Argentii.

Nan has been serving this bacon for special occasion breakfasts...since before I was born. They say it was handed down to them from their grandmother. Who am I to argue?

Execution

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 F (200 C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or baking foil.
  2. Prepare the Bacon: Lay the acon strips on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they don't overlap.
  3. Mix the Topping: In a small bowl, combine the chopped pecans, brown sugar (if using), black pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Coat the Bacon: Brush each bacon strip with a generous layer of honey. Sprinkle the pecan mixture evenly over the top of each strip.
  5. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy and the pecans are toasted.
  6. Keep a close eye on the bacon to keep it from burning!
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the bacon from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Components and tools

  • 1 pound thick-cut bacon
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
  • Observance

While this classic recipe is enjoyed year-round, it is espcially popular at holiday times when it is dressed up with seasonal nuts, toasted seeds, dried fruits, and spices. Because of the seasonality of these speciality ingredients, these variant recipes are often tied to specific holidays throughout the year.

It's absolutely delightful. I've got a recipe for candied bacon-wrapped onion rings, too.

Fabulous article! I'm glad you submitted it to the tradition special category, because I got to make a tasty meal today. :) I should've heeded your advice to watch the bacon more closely, but we live and we learn and it was still delicious!

Burnt sugar is still tasty sugar, like when you catch a marshmallow on fire by accident instead of gently toasting it. And the chewy bacon is VERY chewy, but the well done is nice and crispy.

Dammit now you made me hungry for some bacon. I love the addition of the images because they do look delicious to eat, and some of the small lore around it. Granted, I can imagine thousands of years has changed the recipe a little bit or the tastes must have gotten different as animals & plants change alongside it.   Honestly the only thing I feel would make this article flow a bit better is if the ingredient list came before the cooking recipe, maybe in the sidebar too to fill that one out as well. But overall, sounds very delicious, maybe should give it a try some day!

This is such a fun article! I love that there's an actual recipe involved. I'll have to try it sometime.
