The Thomters reluctantly aid the party if they decide to go on a path reforming the City of Lumencroft. The first step is to organize and rally the best candidates to bring about the desired change in the city.

    Key Figureheads and Icons

    Edelson

Edelson is the Mayor of the Town of East Harrow. He is a reformer more than he is revolutionary. To him, it is better to live free than give away one's soul to the artificial and soulless way of how Bertram governs the city. If he had his way, he would reinvigorate the old Dover traditions and bring back the joy and happiness of everything. The main criticism that Edelson has is with his soft nature on handling problems. To him, he avoids tough issues and is soft on his approach.

    Helman Stottard

The Chief Constable seeks a seat at the table, believing that a simple change in leadership is all Lumencroft needs. His experience in managing the city itself is clear but he has only governed the security and justice side of things. A few changes is all the city needs. The obvious criticism is that Helman is a tight-fisted City Council member with concerning connections and uncertain loyalties.

    Terthos

Terthos has seen and endured the harsh treatment of the Labor District. He is secret rallying cry for those wanting a better life from the constant and meaningless hardship. He is a violent revolutionary who demands a complete overhaul of the city. The criticism is that he is violent and unpredictable to those who align with City Council.

    Meeting in East Harrow

Come the day of the meeting, the icons are reluctant to work together but must all agree on what is to be done. Without the party intervening, they will have difficulty getting past their different methods and beliefs.

    Revolution's Purpose

They discuss the following topics to cement a shared and common goal so that the revolution can be successful.

Who will want to take charge with Clarence Bertram being removed?

  • Edelson naturally volunteers, believing that his experience with East Harrow would be greatly beneficial overall.
  • Terthos believes that workers ought to have the biggest say in running the town, as they're the ones who have to slog through everything.
  • Helman believes that someone with experience or maybe even a different member of City Council.
  • What type of change do we want to see in the city? A hard change or a soft change?

  • Edelson believes that the city needs more humane aspects rather than a complete overhaul.
  • Helman defaults to how the city normally operates, as that's what he's used to. The clockworks make for efficient security compared to the constables. He instead views this question from a security standpoint for his preferences.
  • Terthos wants everything about the city to change or removed: no more Labor District, no more City Council, no more special treatment, and no more Machine.
  • Revolution's Method

Should the revolution be able to get to this point, they devise a strategy to make the revolution possible. With Helman present and on-board, he can make the process efficient with his insider knowledge.

    The Clockwork Factory

One of the biggest sources of the clockworks comes from the factory. Destroying it will whittle down the amount of clockworks that come to Bertram's defense. With Helman present, he can get disguises to make it easier getting in as simple lackeys.

    Power Station

This station is operated by clockwork efficiency. Destroying it will mean reducing the power available to the clockworks. With Helman present, he knows where to clip power to strip it away only from the factories and clockwork stations.

    Clockwork Factory

The party aids the revolution by confronting and shutting down the clockwork factory. Getting within the factory will require a great deal of aid as the clockworks were right to be on high alert.

    Clockwork Factory Outside

    Read once the raid begins:

The cry of an elk signals for a plethora of massive animals to strike and lash out. Snakes crawl from the gutters, massive eagles dive from the skies, and massive deer charging in the streets. The clockworks stagger from the surprise and lose their formation. The gaps are enough for you to slip through and get deep within the facility.

    Read on going deeper inside:

What catches you off guard is something dark and familiar yet unusal for its place. Standing near the base of the stairs, a terrible macabre figure stands patiently. Surrounding him are four rusted clockwork drones.

Waldemar Beck beckons to the party with a proposal: Open a Black Gateway within the factory and let Null creatures deal with the clockwork factory. Characters can make the following checks:

  • DC 15 Arcana Check: The Null is a place of destruction. The party will get caught in the crosshairs once the machines go down.
  • DC 20 Insight: Waldemar specifically isn't proposing this. Dark Null creatures are eager to devour and snuff out life and light.
  • Into the Factory

    2. East Hall Storage

Countless clockworks are stored here, for above, there is a rotating crane that drags and drops clockworks into any empty spots. On the south side of the room, there are battery chargers.

    3. Bertram's Office

This office is used by Mayor Bertram occasionally to personally deal with dissidents when in the Labor District. A Kenkorder is present:

  • Bertram. As impressive as you are, there is one great flaw with automatons: There is no soul. It is all purely input command and output result. I believe we did pretty well on curing that for you. After all, we have sailcrafts up in the air, we have rapid communication, and now, even performed a successful soul implant. You haven't faltered for a week now.
  • Machine. No... sentience is unbearable! I feel hot or cold all the time! I wince as rusty gears squeal for the turning to stop! The bloat of smoke being funneled through a thin tube. So much pain!
  • Bertram. The purpose of pain is to tell the body where damage is done and to avoid it. We will get such things sorted out and refined in due time, my magnum opus. We just need to be sure your soul implant is set. If I find the perfect candidate, worry not.
  • Machine. How soon? I yearn to manufacture without the raw pain of vibrations sent by smashing tools. What can I do to speed things along?
  • Bertram. You have a point. I do struggle with trusting others and their visions. I could split my own soul just for you. For now, I leave this recording as a reminder to keep an eye out for someone of interest.
  • Machine. No! It will be done now! The city must survive if I am to be its heart!
  • Bertram. And I as its brain. Very well, Machine. Let us experiment yet again.
  • 4. Engine Room

This massive room holds the Foreman alongside lesser clockworks. They fight any intruder who come inside and pursue until detained or killed.

Once any fighting begins, the Machine taunts the party:

  • "Thomter servants! You will be dealt with harshly for ruining everything!"
  • "Gears and cogs, steam and smoke. I will industrialize every facet of life if I have to, including your deaths!"
  • "This world is a machine, a machine for pigs, fit only for the slaughtering of pigs!"
  • "Kill them, my clockworks, kill them all!"
  • "I will spin the great world wheel and set the future upon the path to perfection!"
  • "Do you think stopping the power station and the factory will stop me? Wrong! I made this city, I am this city!"
  • "Fall on your knees! Ashes, ashes, bones and ashes. For the pile will reach critical and we can have such a burning that this city will shine as a beacon of perfection for the world!"
  • "Wenches, beggars, orphans, unfortunates. Pigs all. But I will purify the streets, cleanse this city, set the great industry free. I will clean Lumencroft, make it perfect!"
  • "Hear me, Thomter servants! My gears are adjust, my steam is built. First Lumencroft shall be perfected and pure from unfortunates, then shall the world once I dispose of you!"
  • "To Inferna with you, Thomter servants! You cretins, you short-sighted unfortunates! A revolution of simpletons! These harbingers of imperfections, offal and sputum. Yes, you belong amongst them and you can die amongst them!"

  • Read on the factory's shutdown:

With levers lowered and wheels turned the other way, the lights slowly go out one by one. Cogs come to a squealing stop. Conveyers are pause with whatever parts they have. Finally, exhausts exhale their last puffs of air. Only darkness remains in the factory and the wind blowing through the still machinery.

    The factory is now silent.

    The Messenger's Inquiry

Waldemar Beck stands yet again in the party's way. This time, he inquires a question for the party:

Our Host wishes to know why life is worth the fight of living when everything rots and dies eventually. In the end, does it even matter?
    — Waldemar Beck

    Choatic Streets of Lumencroft

It's all one massive fever dream stepping back out into the Labor District.
