The long-sealed doors of Shepherd's Stronghold were suddenly opened when an awoken Echoless attempted to reunite her half of the Oculus Infinium with Shepherd's whom she believed to be dead. Instead, she found a horde of crazed undead just waiting to finally be released. Once restored to a state of sentience, Shepherd marshalled his undead and invaded Horizon with full force in an attempt to find Echoless and her amulet shard.

The reason Shepherd's ambition still burned after all this time sealed away? He knew Cataclysm had escaped his prison and was gathering strength. He believed the only way to stop his old enemy was to enact his old manifesto: remove humanity's choice to commit evil and Cataclysm would starve.   Ultimately, he was stopped by an adventuring party who took up the task of gathering weapons and allies to combat the undead who sought dominion over the kingdoms of men. He was defeated in his lair and his phylactery was taken to the Mystic Isle of Lonelei/Brynn, who held his one-time friend in stasis until such a time that he could be useful to the new struggle against Cataclysm that was sure to come...
