Elves

Basic Information

Anatomy

Elves follow the basic humanoid pattern.

Genetics and Reproduction

Elves reproduce sexually.

Growth Rate & Stages

Elves do not reach adulthood until they reach 100 years of age, and they can often live for over 700 years.

Ecology and Habitats

Elves are adaptable, but many, especially wood elves and drow, prefer specific environments; forests and dark places, respectively.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Elves, while much longer lived, are not significantly hardier than any of the younger races, and therefore must eat around 1 pound of food and drink 1 gallon of water per day. Many wood elves prefer to not eat meat, and the drow include a great deal of fungi and lichen in their diet.

Biological Cycle

Of the elves, only the eladrin are greatly affected by the passing of the seasons. It is not well known how exactly this occurs, but it is known that the seasons have a powerful affect on the eladrin's innate magical abilities.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

It is extremely difficult or nearly impossible for elves to grow beards, and they are typically extremely androgynous, taking after the form of their creator, Corellon Latherian.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Elves can be found in nearly all of the major cities of Archaeon, but most elves live in the Darkwood.

Average Intelligence

Elves, especially high elves, are often among the most intelligent of the races due to their long life.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Elves are unusually perceptive, and many also possess a minor level of magical ability.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

Elves, partially due to their long lives, do not have very strong ideas of gender- in fact, their language makes few to no distinctions. This may have originated with the genderfluidity of Corellon Latherian, their creator. This can be somewhat disconcerting for races who rely on gender, either in their language or as a part of their social order. Not all elves believe in this loose interpretation of gender- the drow, for example, believe very strongly in the gender binary.

Relationship Ideals

Most elves do not show affection the way the other races do; a simple brush of the fingers can often mean the same to an elf as an enthusiastic kiss from a lover. However, elves who live among the other races, especially with beings they care about, often learn to show affection in the manner that race is accustomed to.

Average Technological Level

It is believed that the elves are one of the most technologically advanced races on Archaeon; the elf Sildar, for example, was the original inventor of the airship. However, very little of the supposed elven technology has been seen by outsiders, and the claims that do make it out of the Darkwood are too outlandish to be believed by many.

Historical Figures

The most well-known elf is Sildar, the inventor of the airship, particularly for the role airships play in the economy of Archaeon.

Common Myths and Legends

The elves revere the deity Corellon Larethian above all others, holding them to be their creator and protector. They despise the goddess Lolth and her drow followers above all others, for their role in the downfall of their civilization. Second to Lolth in the hatred of the elves is the orc god Gruumsh; the tale of the day Corellon cut Gruumsh's left eye out in a duel that shook the world is oft-repeated to elf children.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The remaining political structure is extremely isolationist; however, many individual elves believe that it is their duty as an elder race to teach the younger races the ways of the world, and therefore go among them as teachers. Wood elves especially believe in the importance of knowing the younger races, and guiding them so that they avoid making the same mistakes the elves did.
