Casteviedan Venator

Origin

“Call my pigeons a flyin’ rat again - and I’ll have them peck out your eyes!” -A livid Venator
Even before the radio was invented and going back as far as to a pre-civilized society, the Venators have always existed within the human tribes that hailed out of Casteviedo. To them, the pigeons were not pests but lifesavers. They were messengers between tribal leaders to warn each other for threats, establish secret meetings and sometimes even used to a degree within hunting. To locate prey.   In the current age, the Venators have never been as important as they are for the Casteviedan people and the Revenant Legion. Where technological limitations fall flat, birds are already perfected by nature. Where the radio might not reach, or gets destroyed, the pigeons already stand ready to fly. Where the enemy moves in silence, the eyes and ears of raptors are far keener than any other instrument that humanity has.

Promotion and Training

The Venators are usually promoted from Logisticarius or the aspiring Kennel Masters that fail their physical tests. As backline units, they focus less on combat and more on training their birds as well as maintaining radio posts and delivering messages. This means a good portion of both engineering and penmanship go into their field education.

Weapon

Casteviedo-pattern Marksman Pistol

A long barreled lever-action revolver that holds only four shots, but serves as an incredibly accurate pin-point precision weapon with massive stopping power. The firearm is a poor choice against swarm units, as it must be loaded bullet by bullet and has a slow rate of fire. However, for a backline unit that mostly keeps out of combat - the revolver has felled many monstrous units that tried to fell the Revenant Legions’ communicators.

Armour

Casteviedo Light Raiment - Venators Pattern

The Venators wear a light and mobile half plate above their torso, with scalemail shoulderplates and a segmented kilt that protects their lower bodies and knees. Where the light raiment deviates from the usual standards worn by the sharpshooters and logisticarius - is their sleeve.   On top of the wearer's dominant arm, the olive green and earthy brown lorica segmentata carries a cured leather bracer. Which is one of the rare cases where leather is used as armour on a unit of the Golden Empire. This bracer carries the purpose of protecting the wearer from the claws of their own raptors, without sacrificing mobility.

Tactical Intelligence

Strengths

  • Anti-Large: Heavy calibre with precise shots can decimate small numbers of monster units.
  • Elite Spotter: Use of raptorial birds and maps for near perfect combat intelligence.
  • Long Distance Communicator and Coordinator.
  • Can settle forward outposts.
  • Casteviedan Fury: Unbreakable Morale and Loyalty.

Weaknesses

  • Limited ammunition: Can not withstand attacks from larger numbers.
  • Glory Hounds: Sometimes rather fight and die in battle, than retreat to live another day.
  • Mediocre Fighting Skills: suffers in melee or long ranged fights.
  • Strategically Vital: fallen Venators could force a retreat even if victory is in sight.

Tactics and Logistics

Manpower

A total of ~10.000 Venators serve beneath the banner of the Revenant Legion. While the majority of their numbers are far from the battlefield, to communicate between forward bases - Ordinant lead contubernium always have a pair of backline Venators as a backup in case the radio transmitters fail. For an Ordinant lead century, they have a Turma squad of twelve Venators supporting each of the Contubernia.

Leadership

While Venators near the front most usually take orders from an Ordinant with the rank of Centurion or Optio in the field, they take orders from about anyone when serving from the basecamps. This is due to their role as messengers, at which even ordinary legionaries can command them to a degree of delivering messages - for as long as it makes sense. The chain of command still dictates whose letter is priority, and abusing the Venators role for self serving purposes can end in the individual being court marshalled.

Support

Without the Venators, the Casteviedo III Revenant Legion would lose the edge which makes their otherwise undermanned, underpowered, and undersupplied military force a powerhouse that topples giants.   The rapid communication links which they establish between the frontline, outposts and artillery, as well as the Golden Empire civilization at large - allows them to outmaneuver and outflank forces that are far above their own size. With their information over the lay of the land, the Casteviedan military can make entire armies of their own disappear into the shadows. Then be reborn out of nowhere in the middle of enemy territory, to strike like furious revenants.   Their lack of proper supply lines are turned from a glaring weakness to an infinite strength beneath a Venator's eyes. Allowing for the legionaries to move vast amounts of supplies with donkeys and hound carriages - while remaining unseen. Their lower numbers and capability of settling any territory with the help of the birds, also means there is no distance which can hold the legion back.
