Casteviedan Sharpshooter

Origin

“You won't hear me making any poetic speeches. Nor am I a hero that would go toe to toe with the monsters of our world. I am just a hunter shooting from a comfortable distance, and that is enough for me - so take it or leave it. It just so happens that these are my nocks in the woods that the devilish spawns defile. It is also just a happenstance that big, red and fiery heads stand out in the wilds. Capping them between the eyes really is just as easy as shooting fish in a barrel. Shit, there goes another one.”
The Casteviedan Sharpshooters originated when ordinary legionaries met with ballistic universities and advancing technology. They are the lighter, more mobile upgrades that carry the role of infantry breakers. Through standing side by side in line based combat, they are trained to rapidly fire accurate volleys into the enemy frontlines. Thinning them out, before falling back to reposition.   They have no specific target in their sight as their objective is grounded in getting the highest kill-tally possible. Where other special units within the Revenant Legion all have preferred targets, the Sharpshooters are the ones that ensure no enemy escapes Ysand’s penance.

Promotion and Training

Most legionaries that have served in combat and survived a couple engagements are promoted to Sharpshooters. They are by no means a flashy unit covered in medals and ornate carvings, but rather granted high quality rifles that could turn any person into a lethal machine.   Unlike most other units of the third, their training comes after the promotion. Leaving it up to the sharpshooters themselves to practice in their spare time or even attend military colleges should they wish to ascend further to an officer, or Eliminator.

Weapons

L’brodeux Deathslinger

The Casteviedan Sharpshooters go too rifle. Due to the long barrel and stock, this lever action gun is both powerful and precise, while capable of holding fifteen shots loaded to be unleashed in rapid succession. Due to the medium sized calibre of the rounds, they can also be used in pistols.

Casteviedan Rapier

A devious upgrade from the gladius. Sharpshooters are not just deadly in long range, but thrives in melee for as long as they can stab their enemies from a distance. Through a high quality rapier that was once the standard blade among Casteviedan nobility - it now serves the army as a grim reminder of what they seek to reclaim.

Lloren Huntsman’s Pistol

A long bore single shot pistol made for medium range dominance. This weapon is the Sharpshooters last resort against charging units with heavy armour. Having an obscenely powerful stopping power that can penetrate a fully armoured knight and still pierce into the bone of the poor sod behind them.

Armour

Casteviedo Light Raiment

The Sharpshooters of the Revenant Legion wear the same olive green and earthy brown colours as the rest of their fellow legionaries. They stand out from most though, as carrying less protection by having only a half cuirass over their chest - as opposed to a full banded armour. Only a few other vital parts are covered. Their wrists clad in bracers, legs by metal knee guards and shoulders by armoured pads.   On top of their heads, they have no helmets but rather feathered hats in the same forest-like colours as the rest of their wear. Accompanied by green cloaks around their necks, that serve a role as camouflage.

Tactical Intelligence

Strengths

  • Stealth: The Sharpshooters strike from both distance and shade, allowing them to pick away at the enemy's armies and relocating without ever being caught.
  • Rapid Firing: The loading capacity and the low weight of the rifle munitions allow Sharpshooters to rain missiles through swift skirmish infantry, protecting their allies' flanks.
  • Duelists: Keen rapier skills allow Sharpshooters to hold their own in melee combat against ordinary enemies.
  • Casteviedan Fury: Unbreakable Morale and Loyalty.

Weaknesses

  • Relocator: Requires vast frontlines with a lot of coverage to successfully function. Without relocation, they are locked just behind the first line of the infantry, unable to flank.
  • Mediocre mobility: Sharpshooters only have good speed for short bursts and are easily shattered by cavalry or even armoured charges.
  • Expensive: Sharpshooters use top of the grade rifles and each casualty is a tremendous loss of experience and resources.

Tactics and Logistics

Manpower

Sharpshooters make up a significant part of the third legion, as ~60.000 units in service to the Revenants. They are at large deployed within sharpshooter cohorts of five thousand, making up one fourth of the manpower within a mixed unit vexillatio.

Leadership

Each cohort of Sharpshooters is further dissected into five centuries, which are led by a Centurion each. These officers directly relay the orders from the cohort’s Tribune to the firing lines - ensuring the units position themselves in ways that they can both decimate the frontline, as well as pick off skirmishing units charging their flanks.

Support

Sharpshooters are supported by Scutari and Legionary mixed forces. Carrying out the role of a living blockade to slow down advancing enemy troops, the mixed units allow the Sharpshooters to lay down fire for far longer periods, before falling back. The protection also covers their backs during repositioning, resulting in far less ambush casualties.   Their greatest supporter though, is the one that they never see. While ironic for a legion of guerrilla fighters, the Sharpshooters greatest weakness is other guerrilla auxiliary units. Their strict line formations leave them open for assassins to devastate their ranks with magic and explosives.   The elite Skirmishers serve a vital support role here by singling out the Sharpshooters biggest threats. Often being tasked to remove the deadliest elements from the battlefield before the Sharpshooters start dying enmasse.
