Casteviedan Scutari

Origin

“I carry my shield as I carry my oath. Even as Casteviedo slumbers among ashen ruins, as long as her sons and daughters stand, so does Casteviedo. As long as we draw breath, our dreams to rekindle the dying light are far from just fantasy.”
The Scutari stands as the only truly defence focused unit within the Revenant Legion. Even for a force that bases its strengths in stealth and swift uncompromising assaults, fighting without any plan B is plain stupidity. Here the Scutari plays a pivotal role, not as legionaries that seek to claim any ground and win the battles. They were made to prevent their fellow men from being swarmed and slaughtered. Holding the line while falling back - as their aim is to lose ground with grace, until the enemy overextends to the point where they can end the war on their terms, despite losing every battle but the final one.

Promotion and Training

The Scutari are taken from a large pool of combat experienced Legionaries that have proven their loyalty and orderly conduct on the battlefield. While they are far from elites, they still stand by their unflinching bravery and strength.   Their training consisted of line formations, strength and endurance training, along with having to undergo strict fear invoking drills, such as facing down musket shots behind the safety of their curved plate shield, without flinching.

Weapons

Lloren Equalizer

A fine oaken carved twelve gauge shotgun that threatens to put anyone regardless of size and strength at an even ground. This firearm is not recommended to be used one-handed, even if theoretically possible, due to the recoil. It is however the perfect weapon in close quarters combat against charging hordes.

Casteviedan Riotbreaker

A heavy steel shield with slight curves, made for modern warfare in mind to deflect armour penetration by having bullets and blades alike glance off its sides. Due to the thick steel that weighs down the shield, as needed to resist getting punched through by most projectiles - this tool is worn on the back and plunged into the ground when used. Serving as a mobile wall that the Scutari stands behind. It is also the reason behind their name. The Scutari.

Armour

Casteviedo Heavy Raiment

The Scutari do not stand out from the ordinary Legionaries of the third. They wear the same lorica segmentata above olive green and brown oilcloth, colouring them in the same theme as every other Casteviedan soldier.   This is done purposefully. Creating a confusion among enemy troops when fighting among trees of deep forests by playing into an illusion. That they are charging into the average Legionaries that are powerful in ranged conflict but swiftly demolished in melee engagements. Instead, they face a wall spitting buckshot hails. With their shields camouflaged it also makes their one significant difference hard to spot from a distance.

Tactical Intelligence

Strengths

  • Close Quarters Specialists: Shotgun and shield combo will shatter any blind charge into their lines, forcing enemies to rethink their approach or suffer tremendous losses.
  • Shieldwall: Tanks attacks away from weaker units, allowing allied forces to wreak havoc from behind their shields.
  • Casteviedan Fury: Unbreakable Morale and Loyalty.

Weaknesses

  • No Range: Has no counters for long range enemies. Easily falls to enemy long range units.
  • Poor Armour: Even with the Revenant Legion’s heavy raiment, the Scutari are a low armour frontliner. Weak to piercing missiles and monster units.
  • Heavy Kit: Slow movements sometimes enforce the Scutari to abandon their shield during a retreat, resulting in supply costs.

Tactics and Logistics

Manpower

Within the Casteviedo III Revenant Legion - the Scutari number a whole ~40.000 and make up a significant chunk of the legion as it’s protective backbone. Among the ten vexillatio that make up half a million soldiers together, eight of them have an entire cohort of 5.000 Scutari separated into even smaller groups. Keeping them mobile on the battlefield to back one another up with various tactical maneuvers.

Leadership

While each cohort of Scutari are lead by a Tribune that serves as the main brain to oversee the goals set by the Revenant Legion’s Dominus-Legatus, they are almost always splintered further down into centuries and contubernia.
Each century a thousand men led by a Centurion - tasked by the Tribune to relay their orders down to the Optio. The sub-officers leading a hundred within the contubernia. Their role is to enforce discipline and command formations on behalf of their Centurion.

Support

The Casteviedan Scutari receives support from every single part of the third legion. Before combat, the Scutari do not carry their own supplies due to the weight of the gear they are already burdened with. Instead, each of them is assigned a Logisticarius, Legionary or Quarterhand to attend them almost like a squire would.
In combat, they can expect the Ordinants to look out for them and unleash artillery hails against the deadliest threats towards them. Eliminators and Sharpshooters dance around their flanks to keep them from getting overwhelmed, while the Sanctus fight among them just a step from the frontline. Chanting blessings of holy shields and healing - so that they can remain ever firm while holding the line.
